It requires a massive amount of energy to do it and that makes it a dirty process. The only way to clean it up is to use some from of nuclear energy to do the conversion process.
Old fart Demodog politicians are too busy playing with their, 20 or 30 something year-old left wing, animal rights supporting, astrology believing, environmentalist girlfriends to support anything that might actually work. If they stand up for energy independence the girlfriend won’t take her pants off. I believe that lots of times it is as simple as that
That said the reason it isn’t done.

It didn’t work out too well. Check the history.
Plunk your money down. Just don’t spend mine trying to do it. I don’t subscribe to a “we” policy in energy. Fracking was an I and me endeavor private individuals spending private capital. Same way it should be for syn fuels.
Just use coal as coal.
The technology for clean use of coal in a modern coal-fired station is extremely good these days.
