That's the promise of G.Fast. It's a new technology that can deliver blazing fast internet over the wires (phone lines) you already have in your home. For many, it will be the first time they'll have more than one choice for broadband.

They contract with HORRIBLE satellite Internet companies. If its stormy outside forget about getting online. And on top of they cap how much bandwidth you can use. After you use say 5G or 10G they slow your Internet down to a crawl. You can't use more than 2 devices in your home connected at one time. And want to stream a movie on a service like Netflix forget about it...
Why compare it to the cost of fiber then ? The article clearly says $100K for fiber TO JUST ONE HOME.
As I said, I suspect the article is incorrect. If the “box” is really $70K, then it would need to be a box attached to some neighborhood level substation serving hundreds of homes. Otherwise the capital cost is just ridiculous.
Yikes! I got a goose egg 0 on this page.
OK, I installed noscript then checked again.
This time it gave me a download speed of 1.34. I assume that is slower than the 5mb which it is supposed to do.
Sounds like my ongoing experiences with Amazon.com.....
Ghostery + NoScript seems to be way beneficial.
Perfect for FR ;-)
Yeah, that’s not good news. Twice what I remember, but still nowhere near the 6Mbs Netflix says is minimal.
Also, I just checked on Excede satellite based on another comment and even 5 hours of movie downloads added osome web browsing would used up the data allotment for their most expensive plan.
All of which means streaming via satellite is a no-go, I guess. Let’s hope G.Fast gets out to the sticks.
Comcast or ?
If house lots are 50ft wide in a neighborhood, a 350ft radius might get you 25 homes. $70K seems like a high capital cost for so few homes.
Of course, if the speed drops off gradually but stays above 100Mbs at 1000ft, I can see that high a CC. Or if cheaper repeaters can extend the range while maintaining the 750Mbs.
I’ve got 35, and can easily watch four HD streams and still browse.
We have Time Warner Cable(Now Spectrum) we rent our modem from them, have 200mbps but in a package deal with TV/internet/phone for 141 a month..will see what this merger does as far as price because it would be great to have faster speed and better wifi strength
It’s very Chic...
I’m supposed to get 1.4 MB with CenturyLink - aka, you’ll be linked in a century. Will this be faster?
I still have a “digital” landline....
They are generally those boxes at the end of a street or local community.
I once worked in a building that handled all overseas calls to Europe. What had been 150,000 sq feet of “operators” was by that time run from a computer rack the size of a small refrigerator.
Everything in telecom is getting smaller and faster. And run almost entirely without people.
Most areas have fiber to a node, and then copper to the house.
To have fiber in the home you would need a laser receiver/decoder in the house. Those can be just a little expensive.
Most of the time the download speed in suburban cable systems is maxing out the server you are downloading from.
When I worked at the cable company we had a node in our office. That speed was sweet.
My weather rock is faster and more accurate.
ATT uverse can put 13mps through copper line.
