A commencement ceremony turned unruly over the weekend when the keynote speaker, María Elena Salinas, one of the most prominent journalists in Spanish-language news in the U.S., underscored the achievement of the Latinos among graduates and made some remarks in Spanish.
Non-Latino graduates and their guests at California State University, Fullertons College of Communications booed the Univision anchor and yelled at her to leave the stage, according to a student who was at the ceremony.
In social media posts following the incident, the Peabody Award-winning journalist said she didnt notice the uproar and chalked it up to "sad racism on the rise."
One person, whose handle is @JakeHolzschuh, responded on Twitter, We were upset that your address was aimed at one ethnicity instead of the whole class. Had nothing to do with racism.
Salinas answered: Unless you're Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
The journalist, who is one of Univisions most prominent anchors, delivered two commencement speeches at Fullerton. One was delivered at the university-wide graduation, where she was given an honorary doctorate, the other at the universitys College of Communications commencement.
In tweets leading up to the ceremonies, Salinas said she was looking forward to addressing the graduates, noting that the university had the largest population of Latino students in the state. The universitys website puts the Latino student population at slightly more than 37 percent.
The second, smaller address was the one that created sparks, according to a first-person account by graduate Denise De La Cruz in the Orange County Weekly.
De La Cruz describes Salinas speech as well received until the anchor became a little too Latino-centric and blatantly anti-Trump.
De La Cruz said that Salinas asked the crowd to repeat some Spanish motivational words after her, parents in the crowd yelled, What about us?

She extols the products of Cortez' brutal genocide.Bernal Díaz del Castillo(14951584) served under Cortés through the entire Mexican campaign, and his narrative, one of only four extant firsthand accounts, is both an invaluable hirstorical document and a spectacular epic. He was with Cortés when the latter sank the ships, thus committing the small band of conquistadors irrevocably to the Conquest; he was privy to the counsels of the leaders and was at hand when Montezuma was made a prisoner in his own palace. Bernal Díaz fought in over a hundred battles and skirmishes against an enemy who made living sacrifices of their prisoners. These things he saw and recorded in a bold blunt voice whose immediacy, in Maudslays classic translation, reaches across the centuries to invite readers to witness for themselves the horrors and wonders of the initial, apocalyptic clash between two great civilizations.
The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico by Bernard Diaz del Castillo
Invaders from Spain ruthlessly displaced the native inhabitants. The speaker is typically Orwellian in selective memory.
Criminal immigrants = crimmigrants.
LOL, I was seriesly thinking of pinging you, but wimped out...
Never fear the FightinWhitey! I ping him all the time!
My peoples.
I think I’ll keep them.

;)
Sounds like she’s really charming-not...
She has lighter skin and hair than I do, too-I probably have more Native ancestors than she does...
Was working with a Texican with a stronger drawl than mine.
A Spanish guy, I say Spanish because he was as white as me so he wasn't a Mexican, walks up and starts speaking in Spanish to him and doesn't even look at me.
He looks at me and says, "Do you know what he said? You speak more Spanish than I do because I don't speak it at all."
Now, you might think that his response to me was the funny thing. Well, it wasn't!
This Spanish guy, who had to have understood what was sad, turned bright red, anger flashed in his eyes and he stormed off muttering under his breath. We never did find out what he was looking for and he never came back. Perhaps we were laughing too hard.
Had she tried that BS when I graduated from CAlState Fullerton, I was have been yelling as well. Disgusting.
“I am a Native American because I was born here to two US citizens”
Perfect, thank you. That’s the problem with the left trying to classify everyone as immigrants. I am not an immigrant either, although my mother came here from Italy. But that doesn’t make me Italian - I am 100% American.
She’s racist for not speaking Polish, Lithuanian, Italian, etc.
She singled out one race to address. How racist is that!!!
“There will be push-back against all this stuff people are trying to make happen.”
Trump is making that push-back ok. Cool, actually.
I'm not a Texan because I'm an American.
I'm an American because I'm a Texan.
Your State should have your first loyalty.
The nation should be your second loyalty.
There is a war on American citizens. From multiple angles.
We see it nearly every single day. Fifth-columns aided by the Fourth Estate.
You fly the flag of Tennessee instead of a US flag on your home page so you get it to some degree.
And they would still be pooping in the dirt!
And we’re just in the early innings of their Bolshevik breakout.
That’s what worries me. And with the Supreme Agitator in Chief still having 8 full months to wreak more havoc.
throw mescins into the sea....
