A commencement ceremony turned unruly over the weekend when the keynote speaker, María Elena Salinas, one of the most prominent journalists in Spanish-language news in the U.S., underscored the achievement of the Latinos among graduates and made some remarks in Spanish.
Non-Latino graduates and their guests at California State University, Fullertons College of Communications booed the Univision anchor and yelled at her to leave the stage, according to a student who was at the ceremony.
In social media posts following the incident, the Peabody Award-winning journalist said she didnt notice the uproar and chalked it up to "sad racism on the rise."
One person, whose handle is @JakeHolzschuh, responded on Twitter, We were upset that your address was aimed at one ethnicity instead of the whole class. Had nothing to do with racism.
Salinas answered: Unless you're Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
The journalist, who is one of Univisions most prominent anchors, delivered two commencement speeches at Fullerton. One was delivered at the university-wide graduation, where she was given an honorary doctorate, the other at the universitys College of Communications commencement.
In tweets leading up to the ceremonies, Salinas said she was looking forward to addressing the graduates, noting that the university had the largest population of Latino students in the state. The universitys website puts the Latino student population at slightly more than 37 percent.
The second, smaller address was the one that created sparks, according to a first-person account by graduate Denise De La Cruz in the Orange County Weekly.
De La Cruz describes Salinas speech as well received until the anchor became a little too Latino-centric and blatantly anti-Trump.
De La Cruz said that Salinas asked the crowd to repeat some Spanish motivational words after her, parents in the crowd yelled, What about us?

“sad racism on the rise.”
So she’s agreeing with the hecklers? Mea culpa? Now I’m confused.
Hey Salinas. We don’t like criminal trespassers. We don’t like you either.
Go —— up a rope.
We were upset that your address was aimed at one ethnicity instead of the whole class. Had nothing to do with racism.
Kid....SHE is the racist.

Good. Tell the puta that this is America.
CSU Fullerton is still largely a commuter university, i.e. not just a bunch of spoiled little snowflakes.
I’m sure no latinos/latinas were involved in the booing. Right?
I hate it when commencement speakers make it all about them.
And Ms Salunas is incorrect. I am a Native American because I was born here to two US citizens
If she is trying to talk about indigenous people those are known as First Nations
I did not attend my own graduation at a public university in California precisely because I did not want to listen to some leftist spouting off about how rotten Ronald Reagan was, etc, etc. This crap has been going on for years. College commencement speakers are awful. This Salinas commie ruined the day for most of the graduates.
This American of Latino ancestry would have booed Maria’s sorry ass too-and maybe added some insults in Spanish-she’s a bigot-and those people have divided Americans for the last 8 years...
If you b Spanish, U B Whitey....
That's rich. Everyone including Native Americans are immigrants actually. But that still doesn't obtain a sufficient justification for policy of non-enforcement of laws on the books pertaining to how someone should legally immigrate.
The hispanic graduates graduating from an American university obviously speak english so her addressing the audience in spanish to exclude 2/3 of the graduates is a rude insult. She should have been booed off the stage as a race mongering creep and put on a “do not invite list” for eternity.

And a lot of the students there have a job and are putting themselves through college. They are not all impressionable young kids.
“If she is trying to talk about indigenous people those are known as First Nations”
They’re known as Indians.
“Im sure no latinos/latinas were involved in the booing. Right?”
Dunno, but my guess is probably not. It’s local for me so I’ll have to see what I can learn.
A blatantly political commencement speech? Who does she think she is, Barack Obama?
She’s obviously too ignorant to know the difference between an “immigrant” and a “mojado/illegal”-just another typical liberal...
And this oversimplification is BS:
Unless you’re Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
Multi-generational Americans do not want to be lumped in with illegal criminal Mexican “immigrants”.
