Obama bans federal use of words 'Negro,' 'Oriental'

President Obama signed a legislatively passed amendment to the Local Public Works and Capital Development and Investment Act of 1976 that bans the federal government from using the words “Negro” and “Oriental” to describe blacks and Asians.

“Many Americans may not be aware that the word ‘Oriental’ is derogatory,” said Rep. Grace Meng on New York, Breitbart reported. “But it is an insulting term that needed to be removed from the books and I am extremely pleased that my legislation to do that is now the law of the land. The term ‘Oriental’ has no place in federal law and at long last this insulting and outdated term will be gone for good.”

The measure also updates how the federal government describes minorities, and replaces ‘Negro” with African-American and American Indians as Native Americans. The acceptable reference for Oriental is now Asian-American, Breitbart reported.

Just a few weeks ago, the Library of Congress began its official replacement of “illegal alien” with other less inflammatory references to those in the country illegally.

“Our country is a rich tapestry of cultural backgrounds and Americans of all backgrounds deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” said Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., one of the co-sponsors of the bill.

Lara Logan is a real African-American. But the word Negro is not in any way a description of her.

While you never hear it said these days this company which is kind of split up in many ways was called the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. It dates back to the early 19th century.

At least “wet back” has not been banned. That term was definitely used within the fed gov a few decades ago.

It wasn't but now it is, so people now say 'Asian'

When 'Asian' becomes derogatory, what will the new hyphenated word be?

If is downright funny sometimes to see a liberal newsbunny to try to figure out what to call someone black who isn’t American......

Just did a quick search on the word “oriental” and a train service and hundreds of restaurants popped up. We need to let them know the United States government no longer recognizes them.

I thought “oriental” sounded better than “mongoloid”. There are the words occidental and oriental referring to regions. Asking a PC expert, I was told that “oriental” is an adjective you would use for furniture or a rug. “How would you like to be classified as a piece of furniture?” That doesn’t make any sense to me. Guess I’m a white elephant.

They can ban or demand whatever words they want. Not going to change the fact that black people are going to continue to act like black people.

I looked up various definitions of “oriental” and cannot find anything bad, just means someone from the orient or Asia.

“Not necessarily. Such words could be made a hate crime and could be said only in the absolute privacy of your own home with only those you trust after you are certain your home is not bugged. Those you trust would not include your own children that go to a government school.

Russia was like that, if Hillary gets in, or obama decides a 3rd term would be nice, then it will happen.”

Exactly. This is all about control over thought, essentially criminalizing certain thoughts, and asserting that the federal government has authority to criminalize thought on whims without substance.

It is what political correctness is all about. Trump is the candidate that is fighting political correctness directly, and that is one of the reasons he is doing so well. People are tired of being persecuted for thought crimes, tired of being told they must think a certain way, tired of being told certain groups have right and privileges that most do not, tired of the who hierarchy of “victim” classes. Tired of trying to figure out which victim trumps which other victim to receive the most special privileges and power.

But “White” is still OK?

Why not European-American?

“Oriental” was, oddly enough, more descriptive than the term that replaced it. People from East Asia (i.e. Japanese, Chinese, Koreans) used to be called Orientals. Now they’re called Asians. OK, but “Asia” (as in the continent) stretches from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east. Are people from India “Asian”? What about people from Turkey?

Sure, word usage changes over time. But Oriental (a word used to describe something easterly, which would make sense as a descriptor for people who live in the Far East) is if anything more fitting than to use the name of a vast continent to refer only to people from the eastern end of it.

(For the record, I refer to East Asians as “Asians.” I used to use “Oriental” but somehow made the switch over to the new and improved term years ago. I don’t even remember why I switched; I just did.)

SO, Negro and Oriental are off the board now. Thankfully Porch Monkey and Slant-Eye don’t appear to be on the list. ;-)
