U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said Monday that all lawyers should be required to provide pro bono legal services. "I believe in forced labor" when it comes to improving access to justice for the poor, she said during an appearance at the American Law Institute's annual meeting in Washington. "If I had my way, I would make pro bono service a requirement."

Pro-Bono

Sorry, don’t like him or his music and am wondering why he gets so much time in front of Congress & Parliament etc.
Remember one of the features of HitleryCare was to reduce the # of Med Students and Drs and someone suggested same for lawyers and the consensus was they need the lawyers to keep US in line...or something like that...
Personally, I think it would be great if physicians and attorneys donate time to those who can't afford their services. Many do. That said, it's not the government's place to force this, and it means so much more (and likely has a much more positive effect) when it is done voluntarily - as with all things.
The government could, however, have a positive role in this if they encouraged this kind of service by giving tax credit for voluntary services. If the Clintons could claim charitable donations for giving away used underwear, then voluntarily giving free (or very discounted) service should also qualify.
Mandate pro bono work and watch the disgruntled lawyers provide minimal legal services - doing just enough to keep them from being disciplined by the state bar or sued for malpractice.
Would you want the services of someone who was being forced to work for you?
“I believe in forced labor”
So did Stalin.
More calls for slave labor by Democrats. Surprised... not!
A good number of 'Republicans' approved her.
I’m pro-Bono. I’ve always liked U2.
They’re lawyers!........................Don’t some states’ Bar Associations require a small amount of Pro Bono work annually?............
Im pro-Bono, too! I’ve always liked Sonny...................
What about that irrelevant little thing called the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution that bans involuntary servitude?
I am sure EVERYONE has a cause like that. Do we ALL get to mandate forced labor for our favorite cause?
I think we all know where that would stop.
It wouldn't.
That’s great!!!!! Never saw that before!
Coming with that 5th Justice. Involuntary Servitude itself will be Decided to be Constitutional if legitimate government goals require it.
Every.
Single.
Time.
I think that’s a great idea...And since I need a new roof on my house they need to extend that to roofers...
“Slavery is still slavery you “Wise” Latina even if it for so called Social Justice.”
But its okay to impose on all ER physicians?
I’ll get upset about this when they repeal EMTALA.
So now the Libs want mandatory volunteering. Joseph Stalin had that figured out a century ago.
