Daryl Hall has a message for critics crying cultural appropriation

Daryl Hall is possibly the most interesting man in music. He and John Oates form the most successful musical duo of all time, and even though, their setlists during sold out shows around the world are full of instantly recognizable hits from the 1970s and ‘80s, they are not a nostalgia act.

More than other performers in their age bracket, including The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, Daryl Hall and John Oates have constructed a coalition of baby boomers who remember where they were when “Rich Girl” or “Sara Smile” first hit the radio, and thirty and twenty-something fans who enjoy the smooth, soulful, and pop-infused style of “I Can’t Go For That” and “Out of Touch” as if those songs came out yesterday.

The Carpenters sold far more records.

They had to with Karen's coke habit.

Hall and Oates were one of the last great comedy teams (or so I heard)

Now wait just a cotton pickin’ minute. That’s a ten yard penalty and a loss of down.

Ten yard penalty but also loss of down? That’s harsh considering everyone had a coke habit back then.

I got a soft spot for her. And Amy and Janis.

Just a sentimental old fool.

You'll like his show. Especially the one with Sharon Jones. He is moving to newcomers as guests, but not the ones we really have heard of--which, in this day and age, means that they are likely better than the ones we have heard of.

“Sara Smile”.....just a few notes and I’m back in the summer of my junior year in high school. Some songs do that.

Fun to watch, thanks. I’m now in the mood to watch Footloose.

About the video: I liked that the “choir” did some actual dance moves instead of just shaking various body parts suggestively. We attended our daughters’ dance recital last night-very fun and beautiful to watch. Classical ballet based dance. Most MTV videos are a far cry from that.

Amy Grant. Janis Joplin. Karen Carpenter. All good. Don’t want to know about your soft spot. Have you tried Viagra?

Yeah! And what’s with all the pants and shoes and stuff, too?

They hit their peak in the 80’s, when they had most of their hits. Six US #1’s total and a number of others. Few acts can reach the level of success that they enjoyed for a good while.

Amy Winehouse was pretty young. Recent I mean.

Oh yes. When I say sentimental I mean just that. Not attracted to.

All talented kids. All came to tragic ends. To paraphrase obama “if i had a daughter she’d have looked like ( karen amy janis).”

I always have a chuckle about this nonsense because it’s widely known that Chuck Berry “culturally appropriated” white country music.

What does Chuck Barry have to do with Karen Carpenter? Did he have a problem with cocaine too?
