Imagine if everyone was guaranteed healthcare and an income floor. People would still pursue their calling in life. In fact, they could do so more freely with more creativity and daring without the fear of not making ends meet. It would unleash the enormous creative potential that lays dormant within the hearts and minds of so many office workers, toiling away as their best ideas and dreams wither away.

A basic income for all would raise prices to the point that that basic income would be essentially 0 in value when the household income’s buying power is compared with what it was before the advent of that basic income.
I dunno about Milton Friedman being on the right. He always struck me as a guy like Will Rogers. A leftist with a down-home presentation and a lot of natural ability for cracking jokes. I think of Friedman as a conservative-leaning Keynesian. In his day, that was saying a lot for him, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think he was an Austrian.
It would be added to, not replace, all the payments and allowances and credits now extant. Those stay at home moms, the ones who want this type of stipend would exult in the new ability to pay for an abortion or three every year and drink a lot more sodas or wine and do a lot more drugs.
You are correct in the sense that everyone has plowed all of this effort and research into building the technology, and nobody has invested much time thinking about the societal fallout. When this wave hits a MAJOR re-engineering of society is going to become necessary.
Perhaps the massive automation will be capable of producing goods so cheaply they can almost be given away free?
You sound like my uncle whose #1 complaint in life was that there was no legal mechanism to force his ex-wife to actually spend his child support payments ON THE CHILD.
They never talk about who pays for it or the rampant inflation that it causes.
I am assuming sarcasm. :-)
That is Marx's theory in a nutshell. We're supposed to believe that everyone would just jump out of bed every morning eager to contribute their little light to the collective beacon.
And maybe they would. If their little light was equipment manager for the Swedish Bikini Team. But I doubt there are many people who salivate at the thought of garbage collection or unclogging toilets. So who does THOSE jobs?
Well, it's simple. The kommisars determine what jobs need to be done -- for the good of the collective, of course -- and who is best suited to do them. And before you can say "Leon Trotsky," you're snaking out a floor drain for a crummy two-room flat and a drunken proctologist who takes too great a delight in his work.
Imagine if there was some way to just tax liberals and leftists for their schemes. They can have their socialized medicine, their welfare, their free food and gas, you name it. But they, and only they, have to pay for every bit of it. No credit, no loans, to pay for any of it.
She says everyone. Does that include the entire rest of the world? Has to, to be fair.
Are liberals incapable of understanding that the suckers who were still working would have to be taxed most if their pay and that most would quit working?
yeah and if everyone had a unicorn and a good luck fairey and oh golly gee....
wouldn’t it be wonderful
That if they didn't have to make a living for their crust of bread that it will be just paradise.
That intellectuals will order society, and every man a king would work in real life.
Prime example of this is H.G. Wells.
How he KEPT being a socialist after WWII is a mystery to me.
Maybe he just gave up after realizing that his childish dreams of Utopia caused nothing but death and misery, and he didn't want to admit that much of his life's philosophy was pure BS.
That's a hell of a thing to admit on your deathbed.
Liberals FEEL that basic human nature can and should be "changed" for the better good.
Conservatives KNOW that human nature can NEVER be changed, and that we must deal with that fact.
Great idea! We’ll just plant another money tree
Might as well want runaway inflation, ‘cause that’s what you’re gonna get.
So it was YOU that planted this idea in their heads...???
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.
