FR | May 11, 2016 | Jeff Head

This is one of the best pictures of the new USS Zumwalt destroyer yet.

width=1000>

There she is on her second (very successful) US Navy acceptance trials and will soon be turnd over to the US Navy soon.

They will put her through her paces for the next 18 or more months before commissioning in late 2017 or so. Beautiful and very powerful, modern vessel. The second will launch soon.

See my Flickr Album on this Ship for much more information

Forget that. Put some of that tv/ camera stealth tech on her so when the low tech pirates, Islamist, etc look in her direction, all they see is the ocean and horizon. 😃

The gun turrets are covered in order to maintain a stealthy profile. Either way in a few years the gun turrets will be removed and replaced with rail gun and directed energy weapons which are far more accurate, effective and reliable than traditional gun systems.

Why don’t they name the next one the CSN Merrimack and be done with it.

We would do well to drop the stealth and build more Burkes.

And we need a cheap frigate at 4kt with VLS.

Nice pic. I’d like to see some pics/video of her in heavier sea states.

I wonder if this ship can also launch underwater cruise missles or torpedoes?

The railgun is way behind schedule. It was supposed to be the main weapon for the DDX and the CGX which I believe was canceled.

I think the bow wave looks weird there because they’re turning.

I still want to hear how the ship does in rough seas. That’s been the biggest criticism of the design throughout.

We are building more Burkes. In fact I work on the FLT III ABM Burkes which have the new SPY-6 radar. We just launched hull 115 and 117 (FLT IIA’s until hull 126) is getting ready to go in the water this fall I believe. 116 is now being completed down in Pascagoula. I suspect when we have an American President, due to the increased threat of ballistic missile attack, the construction of Burkes is going to be increased significantly.

Cannot answer that because I do not know. Some of it’s capabilities are being kept close to the vest and rightfully so.

It was just tested a few months ago and it took out a bunker buried 200 feet underground from over 100 miles away. Behind schedule or not, that is pretty awesome. The Navy is now making the decision on which platform to mount the first one. Zumwalt is DDX just FYI, and due to it’s expense only 3 will be built, at least as of now. 1000 is in the water under test, 1001 is next tot he pier and 1002 is still being constructed and is on the rails.

It’d pretty naked. No gun turrets?

Its a great looking ship but seems to be lacking in visibility for the crew to see threats.

We are building more Burkes...quite a few more.

We built and commissioned 28 Flight I/II.
We built and commissioned 43 Flight IIA (with the full helo hanger)
We have built and launched 2 Flight IIA Restart/Tech Inserts
We have laid the keel for 5 more Flight IIA Restart/Tech Inserts
We plan 4 more Flight IIA Restart/Tech insert
We then Plan 12 (at the very least) Flight III vessels.

Currently we have 64 Burkes in the water (two of which are preparing for sea trials)

We have plan at least 21 more after that...and I be we end up build 20 Flight IIIs to replace the Ticos.

At the same time, the Zunwakts are evena step above.

They are big enough to carry the full DBR, they are going to have Electromagnetic Rail Guns in the relatively near future. They will be capable of Laser Weapons System CIWS, and they are stealthy, and the PVLS are simply awesome.

We need an admin that is willing to build 24 of them instead of the 3 it was cut back to.

Those are two 155mm Advanced Guns Systems forward, which shoot extended range munitions over 100 miles. At some point in the next few years, one of those will be replaced by an electromagnetic rail gun capable of even longer ranges at hyper velocities.

They will also be capable of carrying the new Laser weapons System for CIWS when they are ready...in the mean time, aft they will have two 30mm mounts.

They have 80 PVLS (Peripheral VLS cells) for Tomahawks, the new Long Range Anti-Ship missiles, and quad packed Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSMs). These are going to be very powerful vessels.

It’s a tumbledown hull form, with all the modern designs and improvements due to our capabilities now that improved some of the issues from back in the early 1900s.

She is actually performing very well in her sea trials, up to flank speeds.
