Key points:
Rodrigo Duterte's campaign dominated by vow to kill criminals Recently caused uproar by joking he wanted to rape murdered Australian missionary Departing President Benigno Aquino has warned the nation of succumbing to a dictatorship Mr Duterte, the longtime mayor of the southern city of Davao, hypnotised millions with his vows of brutal but quick solutions to the nation's twin plagues of crime and poverty, which many believed had worsened despite strong economic growth in recent years.
And after a record turnout of voters in Monday's elections, Mr Duterte scored a commanding victory, according to data released by the PPCRV, a Catholic Church-run poll monitor accredited by the government to tally the votes.
With nearly 90 per cent of the vote counted early on Tuesday morning, Mr Duterte had an insurmountable lead of 5.92 million votes over his nearest rival, administration candidate Mar Roxas.
"It's with humility, extreme humility, that I accept this, the mandate of the people," Mr Duterte said as the results came in.
Thanks, FReepers on the ground are a great resource.
There was a video that surfaced of Rody Duterte about 3am this morning, after visiting his mom's grave, he was captured weeping loudly. He tried to hide it, but he is just as surprised as the others that he is to be the new President. He realizes the opportunity and the challenge of the task.
The Philippines have been challenged with dynasties and corruption(very interesting history video-15 min.). This is the first President that came from this Island. Most are from the "Capitol Region" and live in guarded communities. Rody lives in a decent house(click to view short video of his house), but not a palace. The one feature it offers him is ready access to the fairways of a golf course next door where his helicopter can land.
Vote Trump!
hey, if you accept Mark’s invite, please swing by here in your private jet. I’d like to go too.
He’s Donald Trump if Donald Trump
1. Was expelled from several college for attacking fellow students.
2. Bragged about how he shot a fellow student
2. Took a bribe to let go captured Communist insurgents.
3. Said about an Australian missionary who was raped. “Was I mad because she was raped? Yes, that’s one of the reasons. But she really was beautiful. The mayor(referring to himself) should have been first.”
4. Hide millions in bribes in offshore banks.
Donald Trump may be a lot of things, but he’s no corrupt psycho deviant.
Most do. They have never forgotten who kicked the Japanese out of the Philippines. In almost every city, there is a MacArthur Highway, or road or Blvd or street. Here, is no exception. It runs right outside the subdivision.
LOL. You're all invited. WV, do you think it is time to show them the roast pig? They seem to like it a lot. Lechon baboy.
Mu inlaws both got the equivalent of $50 US to go vote for some candidate, said thank you, and didn’t go to the polls.
Vote buying has a long tradition here. In the last election, I lived in Ormoc City and a Cedilla (they are a family dynasty there) was running for Mayor against Richard Gomez, a popular actor and person , whose wife is from Ormoc (Lucy Torres-Gomez is their Distirct Rep in the Congress). Richard lost by a soucple of thousand votes. Codillas party paid 1000 PhP, and Richard's paid only 500.
This election, Richard was elected Mayor, and they paid NOTHING for the votes. Codilla withheld donated relief food and water after Typhoon Yolanda, from his non-party members, and much of the billions in aid sat in warehouses and literally rotted. It was exposed.
Yesterday, Marlene voted here in Davao City, at a precinct across town. She registered there last summer as a favor to the Barangay Captain, who allowed us to park our food truck next to Ateneo University on Roxas Avenue. He is a cousin to Duterte, and even though they do not allow food trucks on Davao tweet, he got us a waver. That is more like the way most politic i conducted here. Friends of friends share the rewards of loyalty.
The food truck was a loss for us, but life continues. Since we could't find another place to park it, we couldn't enlarge our clientele. After losing a couple hundred thousand pesos, we gave it up and rid ourselves of the albatross.
But, in spite of that, I have great love for this place and even more for my sweetheart, Marlene. She is a treasure and a great addition to my life. Filipinas do make it "more fun in the Philippines".
Vote Trump!
New Year's at Mark's house. Minierva to the left, Marlene to the right, next to her Mom and step-dad, plus a brother.
Even with a TV crew interview, we didn't see enough increase...
bump to the pig pic!
Yer round fruit look a couple shy o’ thirteen
One of the traditions followed by people from the Philippines during New Year is preparing 13 kinds of fruits. These fruits should be round and sweet.
Some of you may ask Why 13? Thats an unlucky number?. Well for our Chinese brothers and sisters, 13 is actually a lucky number and having round fruits signifies coins so having a lot will bring luck and prosperity this coming 2009.
Another belief is that when you eat 12 pieces of grapes at 12midnight of New Year, it will bring you wealth and more luck for the next 12 months of the coming year.
Fruit sellers are almost everywhere now the New Year is around the corner. For sure, the fruit sellers are already experiencing the luck and prosperity way ahead of everyone else.
Most people follow these traditions because of the luck that they would like to earn. Knowing that the economic situation in the US will affect the Philippines, most of the people would like to grab the opportunity to put things in their favor. Sometimes, effort in earning a living is not enough, people resort to beliefs to help them strive better even if its only on the psychological level.
Happy New Year!

Children jumping and coins on the windowsill ... or is it in front of the door ?
I forget.
I spent 18 months at Clark AB, Luzon, back in the mid 60’s. I have fond memories of the PI...
This pig was the first Marlene had ever had to celebrate her birthday. It was my pleasure to give her a little more than she had before. Though my pension is small, thank God she didn't join with me for my money! She is a daily blessing! She's also a pretty darned good cook and has learned to cook my favorite foods. Fried chicken is on the stove now, for my lunch!!
Yep, I know a ton of guys who were stationed at Clark. It's a business park now. My buddy from Travis, lives there 6 months out of the year. The last time I was at Clark was 1987.
Here is Marlene's Birthday pig... and the beautiful love of my life! Everything on the table was prepared by her except the pig and bananas!
This year, we celebrated at Vikings Buffet. Great food, and pay for one and the Birthday girl eats for free...
Rodrigo Duterte = Donald Trump of the Philippines.
Won in a landslide.
