The Promised Spirit
May 7, 2016
Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit, Elisha replied.
2 Kings 2:9
Tenacity and audacityElisha had heaps of both. Having spent time with Elijah, he witnessed the Lord working through the prophet by performing miracles and by speaking truth in an age of lies. Second Kings 2:1 tells us that Elijah is about to be taken up to heaven, and Elisha doesnt want him to leave.
The time came for the dreaded separation, and Elisha knew he needed what Elijah had if he was going to successfully continue the ministry. So he made a daring demand: Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit (2 Kings 2:9). His bold request was a reference to the double portion given the firstborn son or heir under the law (Deut. 21:17). Elisha wanted to be recognized as the heir of Elijah. And God said yes.
Recently one of my mentorsa woman who spread the good news of Jesusdied. Having battled ill health for years, she was ready to enjoy her eternal feast with the Lord. Those of us who loved her were grateful at the thought of her newfound freedom from pain and that she could enjoy Gods presence, but we grieved the loss of her love and example. Despite her departure, she did not leave us alone. We too had Gods presence.
Elisha gained a double portion of Elijahs spirita tremendous privilege and blessing. We who live after the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus have the promised Holy Spirit. The triune God makes His home with us! Amy Boucher Pye
Dear Lord, we want to be more like You. Help us to be witnesses of Your Spirit within us.
When Jesus ascended to His Father, He sent His Spirit.
When Elisha received the double portion of Elijahs spirit, the first thing he asked was, Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah? (2 Kings 2:14). This question voices Elishas deep concern that the ministry Elijah hadbringing the word of the Lord to the peoplewould not cease after Elijah was taken to heaven.

Mr. Trump is visiting my little farming village tomorrow because the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds happen to be less than a mile from my house. I did all my Saturday shopping today because the road between me and the Safeway will be impassable. I'm also not moving my car out of my reserved parking spot because if I do, by the time I get home, someone else will be using it.
Other than that, everything is fine.

A STRING QUARTET + 1The string quartet is a basic building block of the chamber repertory. If you add one other instrument, you come up with a quintet, and there are many types of quintet.
BARBER: DOVER BEACH FOR BARITONE AND STRING QUARTET, OP. 3The first musical instrument was the human voice. Many composers tried their hands at lied, or art song. The American composer Samuel Barber (1910-81) took Matthew Arnolds poem and set it to music in 1931 with himself in mind as the baritone, backed by a string quartet.
Sam could sit down at the piano and play and sing Irish folks songs for hours, as visitors to his home in Mount Kisco (NY) could attest. He had strong opinions about music, which he rarely kept to himself. This led to a great adventure in 1937.
In that year, Sam was 27 and living in West Chester (PA). He went to New York to record Dover Beach at the RCA studios with the Curtis String Quartet, which was in residence at the Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia.
Barber took the train to New York, spent the day recording Dover Beach until he, the quartet and the producer got it right. The gang went out for dinner and drinks, and Sam recalled that he got as drunk as a lord. He must have been pretty well hung over by the time he got back to West Chester.
I have two recordings for this entry. This is the original 78 rpm recording of Samuel Barber singing his own song backed by the Curtis Quartet. The sound quality is fair and gives you a hint of what a fine voice this composer had.
Barber: Dover Beach, Op. 3 (Barber as vocalist)
This is a recording by one of the greatest baritones in the game, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who died a few years ago.

I wouldn't mind going to his rally, but I'm not comfortable in large unruly crowds, which is why I've never been to a rock concert. I couldn't handle standing in line for hours, and if I ran into a protestor, I'd probably punch his lights out.
Classical music concerts are more to my taste.
