In Deeply Divided Chicago, Most Agree: City Is Off Course
NY Times ^ | MAY 6, 2016 | MONICA DAVEY and GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO

The people of Chicago are deeply riven by race, class and neighborhood, distrustful of the police, fearful of the growing rate of violent crime and united chiefly in their disapproval of the mayor’s performance and their conviction that the city is headed down the wrong track.

These are among findings of a new survey by The New York Times and the Kaiser Family Foundation, which polled residents of a city that has been upended in recent months by revelations of questionable actions by the police, threats of a teachers’ strike, a school funding crisis and an uptick in violence.

The poll finds broad discontent with the police and those charged with overseeing them, particularly among African-Americans. Residents expressed concerns about racial bias in shootings by officers and many show ambivalence about whether calling the police will ease situations or not make a difference. Residents of Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city, appear to have lost faith in many of its essential institutions, including the police, courts and the public schools.

The sharpest levels of discontent appear among black residents on the South and West Sides. When it comes to hopes for young people, satisfaction with city services and — especially — expectations about interactions with the police, the divide between black and white Chicago is striking.

“It seems like the police can do anything and get away with it,” Enix Daniels, who is 50 and black and lives on the West Side, said in a follow-up interview. “There are no repercussions. If we do something, we have to pay a bond before we get out. If they do something they get to sit at their desk.”

Well duhhh! Their problem is that it went off track 80 years ago and they are just now noticing.

Well, you could just get rid of Section 8 and subsidized housing, and let the ghetto rats infest some other location.

I could stand on the balcony of my condo in Chicago and basically start counting the felonies and misdemeanors being committed by the local "yutes" in broad daylight.

Heck, they should’ve voted for Ben Adamowski in 1963!

And so far as the city’s current problem: they’ve run out of other people’s money - paying teachers for not knowing how to teach and retirees for not doing anything at all will become more and more interesting as the years go by.

The funny thing about Chicago is they last had a Republican mayor in the 1930s.

Yes, it's been THAT long ago.

What happened?

He was one of the most corrupt mayors they've ever had.

Now that's saying something when you out-corrupt a democrat.

Don't get me started on Illinois governors.

Something must be brewing in Lake Michigan.

R, or D, they ALL seem to be incapable of getting that terrible concept of "honesty".

I’ve lived in North Chicago, Mundelein, Glenview, and Wheeling (my current town). Within the past 20 years, Chicago has had an increase in the crime rates, property tax rate, and sales tax rate. Why do Chicago voters keep voting for Democrats, if they don’t fix anything? Why didn’t a conservative run for Chicago mayor in 2015?

I’ve seen the same degeneration over the last few years. Before it was bothersome. Now it’s much worse.

85 years of Democrats in charge will get you that way, Chicago.

“Why didn’t a conservative run for Chicago mayor in 2015?”

The last “conservative” Illinois elected was Senator Fitzgerald. And look what both parties did to him.

I spend a good amount of time in the Chicago area as I have relatives in DuPage and Will counties. A very conservative part of Illinois, comparatively speaking. I especially like the Naperville area. In fact, I'll be out that way end of the month for a graduation for one of my nieces.

I've had the same experiences in Chicago which is definitely a town you don't want to take a wrong turn in. I made the mistake once of taking a non-highway GPS route out of the city to get to Naperville and I literally felt like my life was in danger in some of those neighborhoods. I had to lock the doors, close the windows, and pray for green lights. I work in New York City and consider that much safer, Bronx and all.

I don't know why Chicago has turned into such a war zone. It has so much going for it otherwise. Hopefully it can get turned around.

Yet still overwhelmingly Democrat.

The obvious answer is to go further left. (extreme sarcasm)
