ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a womans car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.
Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.
When he saw a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff he said he told the woman, very politely, that he couldt tow her car because she was obviously a socialist and advised her to call the government for a tow.
"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."
Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders supporters.
Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.
I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views, Shupe said Wednesday.
The womans mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.
"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."
Below is Kelle McWades public post:
Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).
Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."
Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.
"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.
I think of it as a choice. Either way has upside and downside. One of the great benefits of being a business owner is the ability to fire clients.
It might be good for business, who knows...it might be bad. Those are the calls you make as a business owner.
I would draw the line at leaving a woman stranded by the side of the road.
The crew I work with can’t afford to snub liberals-we bid the job, and if we get it, we provide the same customer service as we do to conservatives-albeit through gritted teeth. I also add what we call in private a “nuisance fee” of 10% of the total price of the job-the extra charge is there to cover the extra time and trouble brought by liberals and other customers that nickel and dime you to death...
If I’d been the tow truck driver, I’d have made sure she paid cash, right now and I’d have added that nuisance fee, too-but that is just me...
Mixed feelings about that. Yeah, serves her right. But not really Christian behavior. Maybe asking her that, since she is a socialist, why did she not call on the government for help instead of a capitalist like himself. And then kindly provide the service, maybe changing a heart in the process.
But, again, she did deserve it.
20% of the time is not significant? What % is, and why?
Shunning was practiced in the Bible...a LONG time ago.
That and the damage that can result from keying and kicking.
Nobody messed with my car!
“... I would be pi$$ed but I would charge her double or triple...”
Oh, sure. I’m don’t want to help a socialist but for enough money, I will go against my principles. You DO know what they call that, don’t you?
Grandma and Grandpa wouldn't buy from Germans and Japanese during WW II...good for them.
Now, if the woman had said she had no money to pay because of an evil capitalist system, or was badmouthing greedy tow-truck drivers who gouge people because they are in a tight spot, I could easily, and without reservation, side with the guy.
But not because she had a bumper sticker. At the very least, on its own, it simply means the driver is an idiot who can't think.
Anytime I see someone who has a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker, I wish I had a ready supply of my own bumper stickers to slap over it that says:
"I SUPPORT BERNIE SANDERS, I AM TOO STUPID TO OWN A CAR"
Really, that is what I think. (I wouldn't DO that, it is all just fantasy, but...I like the concept alone)
I saw a union guy the other day who had what had to be a $70K+ high end pickup truck with all the accoutrements and options, and he had a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker on it. Unbelievable.
But as I said, I don't support someone denying a dummy service. But if it is the guy's own business, it should be up to him.
Absolutely.
Buy yourself a tow truck so you can demonstrate these principles with your own money.
Name the company "Good Samaritan Towing."
See which runs empty first...your compassion or your checking account.
No way. Being a ‘judgemental ass’ is why people have turned away from the church and God.
If logic entered into her brain in any way, she wouldn't have Bernie bumper stickers on her car. You really don't understand liberals.
Since you decided it's an issue...what are the premises (whether she recognizes them or not) of her socialist belief?
What is that old saying about filling one hand with crap and the other hand with wishes, and see which hand fills up first?
YEP! Such a small scale means nothing. Larger scale only pushes those on the fence to the left.
The other thing I would have taken into account if I were the tow-truck driver is the fact that the family mechanic had recommended me.
I agree it is the Mr. Shupe’s business to run as he sees fit, but if a friend or acquaintance of mine recommends me, I would keep in mind that I would be putting that other person in a bad place if I treat a recommended customer in that fashion.
I might have had to bite my tongue, do it with distaste, but I would have done it, because I didn’t want to put my associate in a bad position through no action of his own. It’s bad business. But, as I said, it his life and his business..
We can obviously draw extremes and say “Would you provide services to one of the 9/11 hijackers or Hitler, etc” but that isn’t really what this is. It is, at best, dealing with a stupid, unthinking person. And there are plenty of those, of all types and political affiliations.
****Bernie is there because churches, back in FDRs day, already were jumping for let Uncle Sam do it bait.****
FDR was a democrat who promised a “new deal” after three years of depression. His famous line “The only thing to fear is fear itself” was a crafty way of using peoples fear against them.
The churches were comprised of fallible people who were afraid. They bought the socialist lie that government could help people better than the people themselves. That put less money in the peoples and therefore the churches pocket to help their fellow man.
To say that the churches “jumped” at the chance is rather disingenuous at best.
