In Clintonland, It's 'DEFCON 1' for Trump
NBC News ^ | May 4, 2016 | Alex Seitz-Wald

For more than two years, Hillary Clinton has been Democrats' sure-thing next presidential nominee, while Republicans sorted through a messy and expansive field of wannabes.

Yet now, she's dealing with an interminable primary, as the GOP's new presumptive nominee Donald Trump trains his sights on her.

The sudden departures of Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. John Kasich from the Republican race - which came sooner than Clinton aides expected - coupled with Sen. Bernie Sanders' decision to stay in the race, creates a new challenge for Clinton, who now has to defend herself on two flanks.

"I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that any Republican, let alone Donald Trump, was able to solidify the nomination before she was," said Patrick Murray, the polling director at Monmouth University. "This makes it really tough for her. There's no feasible way for Bernie Sanders to win the nomination, yet his decision to fight on in anything more than just a token way means she's got to continue to expend resources in places that she wouldn't bother."

Poor Hillary! I feel so bad for her. ... NOT.

Her worst nightmare is coming true: facing Trump in the general election.

How come I’m not hearing anything from the DNC toads in the state controlled “media” about the DemocRATS having a “contested convention”?

But Kasich was the only one who could beat her in November.

LOL

I still don’t know what Kasich was doing. Just bizarre, that rock-solid decision to stay in until, well until Cruz dropped out. I don’t know if that was his hope, that together they could stop Trump but whole thing was weird.

Had a boss like her. Got in her face once and it almost got me fired. Trump won’t have to hold back.

Between now and the time Bernie drops out or loses at the convention, Trump can be presidential, above it all, exactly like Hillary thought she was going to coast to her coronation. Meanwhile, she has to get down in the mud and fight Bernie, alienating his supporters.

It would be genius if Trump can frame the democrat race in a way that makes democrats think the wrong candidate has been nominated, to maximize the disappointment.

SuperDelegates, Bernie was mathematically eliminated before he started. The only question at this point is if he reaches the convention with more votes cast by the public for him than Hillary.

He has always seemed sort of strange to me, even when he was in the House of Representatives.

He was quite clear in his speeches, it would be a contested convention and they’d hand the nomination to the only adult in the room.

I know that’s what he said but it never made sense to me. From his vantage point it had to look like Trump or Cruz. But I guess it made sense to him because he looked quite sad today.

It wasn't real neat, but Trump was VERY effective at painting/defining his opposition candidates. 'Low energy' Jeb, 'Lyin' Ted, etc.

It will be interesting to see what kind of dirt the Clinton machine resorts to. It will also be interesting to see how Trump responds.

It’s a big money game......Manafort said the idea in the general will be to force Hillary to spend time and money where she doesn’t want to...Sanders staying in the race makes her do so....they will focus on taking up her time.

Trump has made the point its rigged against Bernie.

Hillary’s performance has been unimpressive and without black voters, she would be nowhere near the nomination.

And now she isn’t looking forward to a bruising battle all the way to the convention.

That was not the plan.

According to Roger Stone a couple weeks back, Kasich was being funded by Soros to stay in the campaign and represented an alternative strategy to dealing with Trump from the Romney/Bush/etc. faction. But for Kasich to have any influence, Cruz also had to stay in to the end so the two of them could deny Trump from reaching 1237. Once Cruz dropped out though, Kasich lost any of the leverage he might have had, if Cruz had stayed in.
