I think Cruz thought he had it in the bag. He was going to draft Trump to Iowa then break out which he did (one way or the other). After that he was convinced Trump would implode and he had Rush, Levin, and some deep pockets in his corner.

There’s probably one staff member with a stopwatch counting down the seconds and then when the top of the hour hits, the person throws the hand and arm signal to the chief reporter strategically positioned on the stage marker, and BOOM- we got ourselves a WINNER!
