Bernie Sanders says conditions in Baltimore no better than North Korea, West Bank
By Linda Qiu on Thursday, April 28th, 2016 at 5:06 p.m.
Residents of some Baltimore neighborhoods are no better off than people living in impoverished North Korea and the violent West Bank, Bernie Sanders said during a campaign rally in Maryland ahead of that states primary.
"Poverty in Baltimore, and around this country poverty is a death sentence," Sanders said April 24. He then laid out some rather unflattering and harsh comparisons:
"Fifteen neighborhoods in Baltimore have lower life expectancies than North Korea. Two of them have a higher infant mortality rate than the West Bank in Palestine. Baltimore teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 face poorer health conditions and a worse economic outlook than those in distressed cities in Nigeria, India, China and South Africa. We are talking about the United States of America in the year 2016 a country in which the top 1/10th of 1 percent now owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent."
While it would be wrong to take Sanders claim to mean that conditions overall are worse than Baltimore, we found that his specific comparisons are largely accurate.
"The comparisons fairly make the point that there are some parts of this rich country where conditions resemble those in much poorer countries," said Alan Berube, an expert on urban poverty at the Brookings Institution. "This isn't isolated to Baltimore; there are neighborhoods in nearly every big U.S. city and metropolitan area, and many rural communities, that perform just as poorly on these outcomes."
Lets take Sanders claims one by one.

Increasingly these cities are funded by nothing BUT government spending; there really is no viable tax base left (and the attacks on civilization ensure there never will be). These are just Indian reservations under a different name; the populations completely dependent on government wealth transfers, and increasingly even looking at gambling as a revenue source.
The problems for most people happen when raiders cross the frontiers of the welfare reservation (where everything of value is nailed down/buttoned up) and rampage through “softer” targets...
I don't know which would be worse, him, or the Hildebeast. Either way, we would be up sh!t creek. I have a feeling that the Hildebeast might be worse. I think a certain number of people will mysteriously take dirt naps, if she is in control.
There are so many problems with this story that I almost don’t know where to begin.
First, comparing the WORST neighborhoods in one country to the overall AVERAGE of a second country is meaningless. Unless the parameter, infant mortality, life expectancy or whatever is 100% evenly distributed, something which is pretty much impossible outside of Pretendy-land, then you will always be able to draw boundaries which break things down into good and bad areas.
For comparison purposes, you have to compare bad to bad or good to good or average to average. Hell, that’s why we calculate averages in the first place.
I mean, heck, the infant mortality rate for American women who have suffered the death of an infant is worse than the average of just about any country on earth! Horror!!
Second, who says that the life expectancy in North Korea is so bad? The United States had a life expectancy of about 69.5 in 1960 and I don’t consider things to be so much better today. The biggest change seems to be that we could afford our health care in 1960.
But if Sanders wants to convince me that Baltimore is so bad, he should compare its life expectancy to places like Chad (49.8) or Mozambique (52.9) or some other place that actually has a low life expectancy.
Of course, we’re basing this on “official” North Korean statistics. God only knows what the real life expectancy is in North Korea.
You are on the mark. Baltimore was a beautiful prosperous city. Sadly, now gone to the devil.
What a great society.

Like food, clothing, housing, motor vehicles, iPhones? Money?
From what I could find, median household income in Baltimore is about $38,731. Germany's median household income is about $31,252 in US dollars.
"If Sweden and Germany Became US States, They Would be Among the Poorest States"
Here in the United States, in 2016, poverty doesn't have anything to do with money.
Pandering to siphons of a generous tax paying America. FU
Then why is he running as the socialist that he says he is?
I live about 40 miles from Baltimore, and my town is doing just fine.
The similarities to places like North Korea are there, but Bernie missed them completely.
Check out “The Wire”—it is the slimy Democratic politicians who profit from the drug trade and keep Baltimore under their thumb.
Liberals ran it to the ground. Bernie’s answer will be for all of us to chip in and give them paved in gold streets. No thanks Bernie, you reap what you sow. As for me, I’ll take care of the Lord’s house and my house.
Who honeymooned in the Soviet Union...
1.) He’s cherry picking data points.
2.) Most the difference is due to differences in lifestyle that government is essentially powerless to alter, not lack of means or opportunity.
The poorest person in Baltimore can live a long, healthy life if she refrains from drug and alcohol abuse, eats a healthy (albeit inexpensive) diet, exercises and stays involved with others via church or other social and volunteer activities. And is lucky enough not to be assaulted by her fellow Baltimoreans.
The health problems in Baltimore are entirely down to lifestyles subsidized by government social programs that cannot honestly be called well intended. All the politicians care is that the inmates reliably vote Democrat. They are even more reliable Democrats once they’re dead, anyway.
ALL of Baltimore has more tp and beer per capita than Venezeula.
Prince died because there weren’t enough government programs and support for multimillionaire drug addict celebrities.
Mebbie, just mebbie—all that “Mexican Brown” heroin just might have something to do with it?
Ya know—the heroin that TEN POUNDS comes in with each poor little illegal??
a better choice of nations would be Nigeria or Ivory coast or Mali, or Chad
West Africa has more in common with Baltimore than Asia
