Nursing student robbed and beaten on Chicago 'El' train as other passengers ignore her plight

In broad daylight at 10 AM Thursday, 19 year old nursing student Jessica Hughes was attacked and beaten by a pair of muggers whose race the media do not care to mention, as other passengers on the train did not lift a finger to help her.

I was a nurse working at 98th and 5th. NYC. Got on the train in the worn direction or day noticed a little too late Got right off ran up then down to downtown platform. Cop was there He just looked at me and rolled his eyes. ‘WTF? You are making my job difficult, lady. Get on that train and get out of here’. Wearing a uniform. No one bothered me. That day anyway. But that’s a long time ago. It’s a foreign neighborhood. Stay out. Sorry.

I’ve actually seen educated blacks say whites going into black areas “had it coming” when they are robbed, raped, or killed.

Imagine a white person suggesting that about blacks visiting the ‘white area’ of town.

I look at Ms. Hughes’s face and see a heartbroken young woman, probably an idealist judging by her chosen profession that aims at helping others. As her question indicates, she cannot comprehend that others did not care about her plight, for she automatically would come to the aid of another under trying circumstances.

At least she escaped with her life. Next time, should there be another time, she might not be so lucky. Whether she heeds it or not is another story. And that lesson is? Stay far away from the zoo unless you have something to even the odds.

There is an undercurrent in the culture of inner city blacks. First, you’re a sucker if you have a job - your ancestors were slaves, and as a consolation prize, you don’t have to work. Second - for simar reasons, it is accepted and normal to commit fraud with government entitlement systems. Examples are multiple head of household food stamp recilients at the same residence, fake SSA disability claims, fake babysitting operations to get subsidies, and extraordinary abuse of EIC. Finally, once it has become a normal part of daily life to steal from ‘the man’, its not a huge leap to start burgulary...petty theft...car break ins...and then more violent acts...all because ‘the man’ deserves it, due to slavery.

There may have been some who wanted to help, but feared what would happen to themselves or their family members if they became involved, were called to testify, etc.

I've seen fights like these. One got me a trip to the hospital (nothing serious). I intervened and stopped a fight, and took a few punches in the process. No regrets, though.

Anyway, there is also the shock-and-awe factor. This things usually explode quickly. By the time everything registers to a decent bystander, it could darn well be over.

I know you're not excusing the lack of bystander action here, and neither am I. But not everyone is a coiled spring, ready to jump into action at a moment's notice.

When I first moved to Philadelphia in the early 1980s, I walked to Center City from my neighborhood to explore. After several hours of walking, I was tired. I decided to try to take one of the SEPTA trolleys home. I didn’t yet know the name of my neighborhood, or the name of the trolley line that went there, but I decided to jump on one that I thought might be going the right direction.

As soon as I got on, I began to experience misgivings. The trolley began to move north, instead of west... which I had been warned about.

I moved toward the door, and caught the eye of an elderly African-American gentleman, sitting with his hands in his lap. He slowly - and slightly - shook his head, and raised one finger, pointing at the door.

I got off, and walked back to Market Street, and walked home.

Given that the FBI even has trouble breaking into these phones and you can now trace a phone’s location, how is it that these phones are able to be resold?

Also, as much as it sucks, in that situation I would think it be wise to just give the thugs the phone rather than take a physical beating. When I took a self defense course, we were taught to toss the desired object ( wallet, phone etc.) away from your person, if they went for it then let them have it and run. If they still came after you then it was never about the theft in the first place and you better be ready to defend yourself.

Tough call. Were only one other person observing this or a situation like it, response is not so simple. I would say at the most, active intervention if armed or otherwise capable. At the least, trying to find others and encourage intervention.

She lived in the western suburbs where the nimuggers ain't. I commuted that same train
to high school in the city from Oak Park, and I can tell you that stops like Kedzie/Homan
never brought anything but fear, even in the 1960s.
