The string quartet consists of two violins, a viola and a cello. The quartet repertory requires a lot of concentration and rehearsal to get everything just right. As a result, chamber music festivals don’t program many quartets because that level of concentration is difficult to attain with four pickup players. String quartets work best when performed by a professional quartet.
Robert Schumann was the German poet of the piano, and his magazine, “The New Musical Times,” was the mid-19th Century German equivalent of “Rolling Stone.” He was a prolific writer of songs and chamber music. His string quartets show that he was a reasonably good composer in that medium.
This is the first movement of his first quartet. The introduction in A minor is contrapuntal, and the movement itself is in F Major and in sonata format. It owes a lot to Beethoven.
Love of writing doesn’t pay the bills.
