WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER

The string quartet consists of two violins, a viola and a cello. The quartet repertory requires a lot of concentration and rehearsal to get everything just right. As a result, chamber music festivals don’t program many quartets because that level of concentration is difficult to attain with four pickup players. String quartets work best when performed by a professional quartet.

TCHAIKOVSKY: QUARTET IN D, OP. 11, ANDANTE CANTABILE

This slow movement from Pete’s first string quartet was orchestrated years later and is best known in that version. But here is the original. At the first performance, Leo Tolstoy was in attendance and broke into tears. It’s a two handkerchief piece, and that plagal cadence – the beautiful “Amen” at the end – will break your heart.

Tchaikovsky: Quartet in D, Op. 11, second movement

I have always loved this...probably because I recognize the strains of Eih Ukhnyem (The Volga Boatman) drifting through it.

Tchaikovsky loved to quote the old Russian Folk Songs.

I’ll be crossing into the 20th Century tonight. Some surprising material coming up. Did you catch the Borodin quartet at Post #67 from last night?

DVORAK: QUARTET IN F, OP. 96, VIVACE MA NON TROPPO

This is the finale of Dvorak’s famous “American Quartet,” written in Spillville, a Czech farming village in Iowa, during his summer there when the American Conservatory in New York was on hiatus. Tony enjoyed playing organ at morning mass at the local Catholic church, drinking beer with his cronies and speaking Czech, not that annoying German that Austria-Hungary insisted be spoken in their little fiefdom of Bohemia. It was a wonderful time of relaxation with the wife and girls.

A group of Ojibway Indians popped into Spillville for a demonstration of tribal music and dancing, and Tony immediately picked up on the pentatonic vocabulary of their music, which was quite different from the pentatonic Eastern European tradition with which he was familiar. You can hear melodies and rhythms that are part Czech and part American Indian.

Yes...the first time I heard that was actually Kismet’s “This Is My Beloved” on a compilation disc of Broadway numbers.

Even at my tender pre-teen age I sensed that the song was a cut above all the other tunes on the record (I since have become totally passionate about Borodin’s music, but can do without kismet!)

Amazing to think that his day job was a druggist at his own drug store.

Interesting that it was the Ojibwa who influenced Dvorak!

The same Tribe is credited with the Dream Catcher legend which is now popular among all the Tribes, as well as popular American culture.

But it was the Ojibwa that started it! _|:-)

He was also heavily influenced by Longfellow’s “Song of Hiawatha.” There is a lot of that poem in the New World Symphony.

DEBUSSY: QUARTET IN G MINOR, ASSEZ VIF ET BIEN RHYTHME

The French got into the string quartet game when the Impressionists showed up. Claude Debussy’s quartet is considered his greatest piece. This is the scherzo, a wonderful exercise in pizzicato playing.

Debussy, Quartet in G minor, second movement

I liked “Hiawatha”, but “Evangeline” was my favorite. (One side of my family was involved in the “Great Expulsion”, which is the background of the Evangeline Story. They only got as far as Gloucester, MA, though, so they didn’t end up being Cajuns! :-)

RAVEL: QUARTET IN F, VIF ET AGITE

The second movement of this quartet is one of the best known pieces in the French quartet literature, and I’ve posted it more than once. This is the finale, and it never fails to bring the house down.
