Rebuttals welcome.
I have a neighbor with cerebral palsy who was effectively sentenced to death by the Candian government on their death panels, despite her having plenty of money to pay for her own treatment. Thankfully, she escaped that evil Socialist hellhole. I haven’t spoken to her in a while, but I suspect that Soetorocare is similarly trying to kill her off.
I’ve had OHIP, the Ontario socialized medicine. You know how, when you go to the post office, most windows are closed but you see postal workers standing around? And if you try to catch the eye of one, they leave? And the ones that don’t, look like you’ve insulted them? And when you do get to the front of the line, the clerk is bored and desultory? Change that from a post office to a medical clinic, and you’ve got Canadian socialized medicine.
As to the accuracy of the article, ask yourself this-—
How many Americans, a country with ten times Canada’s population, go to Canada for medical treatment? And how many Canadians go to the US for medical treatment? Overwhelmingly more Canadians come to the US for treatment they can’t get at home. There are reasons for that.
False. That's called communism. Socialism does not require ownership, only control.
As an Albertan, I find this whole article so full of crap, I don’t even know where to begin.
I can put it simply with these schemes:
They need public support, which means they need a lot of happy people. To do that, if you’re healthy, the system is a dream. But if you’re not healthy, things get tougher, much tougher. If you’re old, well, you get expensive.
Bottom line: Good Prenatal Care for 100 patients means a lot more support, and VOTES, than replacing granny’s hip...and they both cost about the same.
Since the first item is horribly argued I quit there. Single layer is socialized medicine. It is the govt controlling the pay and what can be give as treatment and who can go to the hospital.
Since the writers knowledge of free market anything is limited I won’t bother. I note there are no sources for the broad claims
“Also: pharmacists here dispense what the doctors tell them to dispense, the first time, without moralizing. I know. Its amazing. “
-
What the heck is she talking about?
I have NEVER had a pharmacist “moralize” about my prescription in my entire life——which has been a long one.
.
In Canada (and many other countries with universal care), doctors run their own private practices, just like they do in the US. The only difference is that every doctor deals with one insurer, instead of 150. And that insurer is the provincial government
What's the difference? There is no difference. The govt then pulls all the strings.
Wait times in Canada are horrendous.
The Canadian Supreme Court declared CanadaCare to be unConstitutional, as the denial of healthcare due to the long waits was a human rights abuse.
The big joke is "In Canada, the waiting period for pre-natal care is 10 months".
Socialized Medicine works great for healthy people! You just pay a boatload in extra taxes and never use the system. You are just out a boatload of money.
Pure BS. Once you have a single payer system, which is what Hillary wants, you absolutely control the health care coverage that every person receives. So, the government can decide who gets procedures and who does not, which procedures are allowed and which are not, etc.
Now, if Canadian health care is so good, then why are so many Canadians coming to the US for medical procedures? How do I know this? Because I live in the Coachella Valley located in the low desert of Southern California (think Palm Springs area). We get many thousands of Canadian “snow birds” who arrive here to spend the Winter months. I do volunteer work at the largest of our three valley hospitals, Eisenhower Medical Center.
In Canada, the non-emergency medical procedures typically have long waits, often many months. So, those Canadians requiring procedures such as hip and knee replacements, back surgery, etc. are having them performed at US hospitals like Eisenhower. In fact, Eisenhower even has special financial arrangements which they offer to Canadian citizens. I suspect similar situations are happening at US hospitals near the Canadian border.
Several years ago while vacationing in Victoria, the provincial capital of British Columbia, I witnessed a demonstration in front of the provincial parliament building. It turned out at the time there were only 3 cancer radiation treatment machines on the entire island of Vancouver (not to be confused with the City of Vancouver). So, most cancer patients had to take the ferry from Victoria to the City of Vancouver which meant that what should have been a simple office visit for treatment would require two to three days due to travel requirements. Keep in mind this was at the second largest city in British Columbia.
I say a huge No Thank You to Canadian health care.
Canadian health care...
Went to a walk in clinic just before Christmas to get my plumbing checked out.
Doctor made a visual and tactile exam...
...urine sample quickly sent off for testing
and also quickly received ultra-sound.
A few days later I went back to see clinic’s doctor
and he set up an appointment for me to see the Urologist...
...on June 20th
~6 month wait
This is probably the biggest lie in the whole article. There have been many studies done in Canada that prove the exact opposite.
Doesn’t mention the lackb I f equipment. ..or..the Canadians who come to US for surgery etc. I lived in Canada and have friends from there. ..it’s socialism and single payer.
Before Obama care was enacted, 85% of Americans were satisfied with their health care. That is why O-care has been so unpopular. Were O-care so wonderful, why all the exemptions, and why do the exemptions go to Democrat supporters, such as labor unions and government and a few select corporations, and not to churches?
O-care has helped mostly immigrants. We will soon be insuring all of Mexico.
My doctor has never “gone on strike”. :)
OK...I have firsthand knowledge of THREE cases:
1. The large conglomerate I worked for in the 80’s transferred the VP of Canada to the US for “reassignment”. His first assignment was getting the triple bypass that had been delayed in Canada for months. - so he stayed at home unable to walk long distances and got sicker and sicker. The company was self-insured, so this was no problem with the “insurance company”.
2. In a case very similar to #1 above, I worked for a company in the 90’s where our fairly wealthy company owner hired a friend of his from Canada (the owner was originally from Canada) and put him on our rather good insurance. Same story, needed bypass, told him to go home and “relax” for months. He got worse and worse until he could barely get out of bed. He was taken off the plane, plopped in an ambulance, and went straight to the hospital and surgery.
3. Quite recently, a business acquaintance of my wife’s with some serious health problems that seemed to be getting worse and worse after several small surgeries finally worked up the finances to get to that Mecca of medical care, Detroit. The doctors there could not believe the multiple hack jobs done and were debating if they could fix everything at once or if it would take multiple surgeries.
I’m sure that they have very fine (albeit expensive in terms of taxes) health care there - as long as you never have a problem until you just fall over and drop dead.
Just a little story from the mid-70’s. My SIL went to have her first child in a hospital outside London, UK. After giving birth, she spend the night in her bed in the hallway as there were no beds available in the Labor and Delivery Ward. True story.
As per point 3 in regards to wait time for doctor’s appointments. From personal experience I would have to disagree with the author, they are as bad as advertised. Case in point, my daughter was given an appointment to see a doctor in May back in October of last year. She declined the offer, and saw a doctor right away back in the USA. Now this was not in a backwater town on the praires of Manitoba, it was within one of the largest cities in the country, Montreal.
The author will have a follow on article about how great healthcare is in Cuba.
