Prince died without a will, according to court documents filed by his sister on Tuesday, potentially causing big complications for that stars sprawling financial estate and musical legacy.
In probate documents filed with the Carver County District Court in Minnesota, Tyka Nelson, 55, Princes sister, said that her brother died without a spouse, children or surviving parents, and that I do not know of the existence of a will.
Ms. Nelsons petition also listed five half-siblings as heirs, and asked the court to appoint a special administrator for the estate because no personal representative has been appointed in Minnesota or elsewhere. Minnesota law treats surviving half-siblings the same as full siblings, raising the possibility of a drawn-out family battle.

If his sister had any sense, she would take a portion to live off of, and put the rest in a fund for the various charities and groups in his town that he donated money to over the years.
Have you seen the photo of her posted to this thread?
His estate goes to his sister and half-siblings. No parents living, no spouse, and he had no children (an infant died at around a week old years ago)..so siblings are next in line.
Not so easy with someone like Prince. There are going to be record royalties coming in for years on existing recordings. There are unreleased recordings in the vaults, and someone has to decide if they should be released, and if so, when and in what format.
Jimi Hendrix's estate was a mess for years, if not decades, before all the financial and artistic disputes were ironed out.
Jim Morrison’s estranged father collected royalties until the father died in 2008, and Pamela’s mother collected royalties up she died in 2014. I don’t know who is collecting them now, but they will still stream in until 2041, if I understand correctly.
I noticed Hendrix had a few albums released as the conflict was finally ironed out.
Some pretty good ones, actually, compared to some of the cruddy albums that were released shortly after his death.
Moral of the story: if you own stuff, have a will. If you are an artist/author/performer, use your will to name both a financial executor and an artistic executor.
(...kiss me to wake me up when this is all over).

Wow. His sister could use the money for some plastic surgery and a trip to the beauty salon.
Jim Morrison’s father was a retired Rear Admiral living in Coronado CA. He was the senior office aboard the USS Constellation during the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
I love the Doors music, but I think if I had a choice, I’d rather have a cup of coffee with the father than the son.
Gasp!
Tyka Nelson did the same thing when their father died. then in court she claimed that she was entitled to everything since she was the only one who cared for her father. Prince purchased the home their father lived in. He hired a nurse to care for his father and paid for his father’s other expenses. Tyka Nelson claimed that she needed the money to start a music career. SHE LOST THAT BATTLE!
Completely tax free and we got the payout in 40 days. We are completely stunned, we have over a million dollars in our bank account, right now and a 1.2 million condo in escrow! I say that here cuz you don't know me, we can't tell anyone we know.
Those are the correct kind of In-Laws! I have a different kind.
Let the battle for the bucks begin!
I do know she is a crackhead.
I can only assume the photo leaves no doubts.
No, Apple screwed up wha I wrote.
Someone might have found and lost again the will
As an attorney who does Estate Planning and Probate for a living, I can tell you that the technical term for what’s going to happen with this estate is “a big f’ing mess.”
Half-siblings are the WORST, and if they’re also half-siblings to each other, HOO-BOY is that going to be a mess!
Of course, it SHOULD be simple, but it won’t be, for a multitude of reasons, at least one of which I can’t mention here.
