As voters in five different states headed to the primary polls today, there is another unlikely alliance, of sorts, forming.
Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner who has expressed empathy for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, is offering him some unsolicited advice.
"Bernie Sanders has been treated terribly by the Democrats both with delegates & otherwise," Trump tweeted this afternoon. "He should show them all, and run as an Independent!"
Sanders has run as an independent for most of his political career and is the longest-serving independent in congressional history. But he joined the Democratic Party to run for president and his campaign manager told Bloomberg News that Sanders would be a Democrat for life.
Though Sanders and Trump's views are vastly different, these two populist stars do have a few similarities. For one, they have enjoyed some of the largest crowd sizes of any presidential candidate. And Trump has likened their candidacies, comparing the struggle he says both men face.
"This is a crooked system, Trump said earlier this month in Rochester, New York. Im not a fan of Bernie. I couldnt care less. As far as Im concerned, I couldnt care less about Bernie. But he wins. And he wins. Like me.
Trump has decried the primary system in both parties, calling them rigged, accusing the votes of being in the hands of the delegates not the people.

Liz doesn’t have millions of people who voted for her....
Sanders does....
I’m sure that has not gone unnoticed by the Clinton campaign...
I do not think it will be her
It’s just to much BS in one dump
Lizzie could be a surrogate for Bernie, could he get offended and pull a Nader on the Clintons?
It would be worth a few bucks for Sanders to pull a Ross Perot on Hitlery.
It worked out well for John Anderson. Well, well for us.
“For a winner this guy whines a lot about the rigged system.
It bugs me.”
Why does it bug you?
I’ve been saying for weeks he should do that.
This was a message to Bernie's voters more than Bernie. If Bernie actually did run independent, it would help Trump. But he is very unlikely to do that. But it doesn't matter, because a certain percentge of Bernie supporters are really NotHillary voters. By being kind to Bernie, he can swipe the NotHillary portion of the Bernie vote in the general election.
agreed. I had to smile when I heard about the tweet. But I think that Bern will probably cut some sort of deal with Clinton for a cabinet position instead. Which will make him a sellout to his supporters, some of whom will gravitate towards Trump. It’s a win-win for Trump no matter what Bernie does.
The whining
He's giving voice to issues that have frustrated many voters for a long time. He is not doing that in a "oh, poor little victim me" way, but in a way that highlights the unfairness to the voters.
We, the voters, see that and think, "Wow, now there is a candidate who actually understands the ordinary people and is not some tone-deaf political insider!"
