Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey says he cast his presidential vote for Ted Cruz, describing the Texas senator as having a deep understanding of the issues and "concrete" ideas on the economy and national security.
"He's a solid conservative," Toomey said this morning outside his polling place in Zionsville. "We don't agree on everything, but having served with him in the Senate, I know Ted pretty well and I think he's got a real, real viable shot of beating Hillary Clinton in the fall."
While Donald Trump leads among Republicans in public polls of state voters, Toomey noted that the nomination process "doesn't end in Pennsylvania."
Toomey had endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who ended his presidential bid in March.
The Lehigh Valley legislator said he "got out of the endorsement business" after that, noting that his own re-election race will be his main focus.
As for his own electoral odds, Toomey - who will be watching returns come in at an event in Pittsburgh - was focused on today's balloting.
"I think my chances of winning today are pretty good," Toomey quipped, referring to his unchallenged status on the primary ballot.
Four Democrats are vying for a shot at unseating Toomey: retired admiral Joe Sestak, former environmental adviser Katie McGinty, Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, and western Pennsylvania small businessman Joe Vodvarka.
Toomey described Sestak and McGinty, the front-runners in that contest, as "very liberal candidates, way outside the mainstream of Pennsylania voters," adding that he feels confident about his shot at gaining a second term.
"I think Ive been able to be very productive in the Senate reaching across the aisle and getting things done for Pennsylvania," Toomey said. "I think my focus on economic growth and security are exactly what voters tell me is important to them."

I, too, voted for The Donald and his committed delegates in the 12th district. Same as my family.
Is Toomeys vote any more important than any other Pennsylvania citizens?
Nope...
I will most likely write someone in for Senator in November. Toomey has replaced Arlen Specter in more ways than one.

“Why exactly is this front page news?”
Well, there’s an election on. PA is a critical state.
And Toomey is a Republican Senator from PA.
Seems rather important to me, as this kind of thing is often persuasive to people.
Support from the Senate isn’t exactly a badge of honor. Neither Cruz nor Trump have collected many endorsements from there. I think Cruz and Trump were tied at 1% until this one.
Well sh1t. I just voted for Toomey in our primary.
He worked with democrats like Manchin and Schumer on “common sense” gun control in 2013. In my view, the moron title goes without saying after that.
Actually, I was unfair to Ted because I for got Lindsey.
Well of course he has been a consistent disappointment since he tricked us into backing him.
No more donations for him.I also deleted Santorum off of facebook.
Isn’t Indiana where this will supposedly happen? However, Kasich has said he will not tell his voters not to vote for him.
You prefer that a democrat take his place in the Senate?
Toomey joined Manchin in trying to pass gun control.
You think I will support a Republican who supports gun control? Are you serious?
If the Dem wins the seat, so be it. I'm done holding my nose for RINOs.
And big supporter of gays in the military.
Lol. He’s about to lose his seat in November.
LOL!!
