PIKETON, Ohio (AP) An out-of-breath caller who found two of the eight slain members of an Ohio family told a 911 dispatcher in a quavering voice that "there's blood all over the house."
"I think my brother-in-law's dead," she said, her voice rising as she adds later that it looks like someone has "beat the crap out of them."
"I think they're both dead," she said before breaking down into sobs, according to one of two 911 call recordings released Saturday by the state attorney general's office.
The calls were released a day after eight family members were found dead with gunshots to the head at four properties in rural southern Ohio.
Authorities continued the scramble to determine who targeted that clan and why. Investigators said they interviewed more than 30 people in hopes of finding leads in the deaths of the seven adults and the teenage boy whose bodies were found Friday at homes southwest of Piketon. They completed work at the crime scene Saturday.
"It's a very active and ongoing investigation," said Lisa Hackley, a spokeswoman for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. "We're looking for the person or persons who did this."
The victims, all members of the Rhoden family, were identified Saturday as 40-year-old Christopher Rhoden Sr.; his 16-year-old son, Christopher Rhoden Jr.; 44-year-old Kenneth Rhoden; 38-year-old Gary Rhoden; 37-year-old Dana Rhoden; 20-year-old Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden; 20-year-old Hannah Gilley; and 19-year-old Hanna Rhoden.
It appeared some of the family members were killed as they slept, including Hanna Rhoden, who was in bed with

The kids weren’t killed. I am guessing ex husband or boyfriend (possibly the father of the 4 day old) who got rid of anyone else who possibly could get custody (parents and grandparents, aunt/uncle). The fact most of them were in bed means they either left their doors unlocked (not unusual in rural areas) or it was someone who knew the layout and had access. Possibly more than one since most of them were still in bed and gunshots make a lot of noise.
One weird rumor is that it was related to one of the victim’s $3000 demolition derby car and related rivalry but that wouldn’t make sense to kill all other others like that.
//*Someone* in this family had an ongoing drug debt or was otherwise involved with drugs.//
Perhaps not. Although it has been reported that the family found some mexicans growing pot and living in the woods behind the house last year.
How do you do it, Holmes?
If that ain't country, I'll kiss your a$$.
Haahhaaa!!! Ain’t it the truth..
Update, 5:15 p.m.: Attorney General Mike DeWine and Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader had very little to reveal about the investigation into the Pike County mass killings during a Sunday evening press conference, but did say authorities found three marijuana grow operations at the scenes of the crime.
Reader indicated teams of law enforcement were in the woods near the crime scenes looking for evidence. Reader and DeWine would not comment on if the crimes were drug-related, but reiterated the shootings were planned and specifically targeted the Rhoden family.
Evidence found during searches around the Rhoden residences would be sent to the state crime lab, where 18 other pieces of evidence from the scenes are being analyzed, DeWine said.
Authorities have conducted 50 to 60 interviews and executed five search warrants since the scene was discovered Friday morning, DeWine said.
Reader and DeWine refused to release many more details to the public in an attempt to keep the “bad guys” from knowing the information in the possession of investigators.
After questions of public safety, Reader told residents of Pike County to arm themselves if they feared for their family’s safety.
DAC can sure turn a phrase, cain’t he?
Unless they're making a living in the cockfighting circuit.
DeWine was the dumbest bastard to ever serve in the US Senate from Ohio And here we thought he would be safely tucked away as a state AG chasing contractors and rip off door to door men. Now he is jumping on the stage to revel in the biggest murder ever in Ohio. If anyone can screw it up DeWine is the man to do it.
it seems to involve drugs. come to find out the family had marijuana operation. come on. really. nothing like bringing this kind of violence into your family.
I join in your prayer, my FRiend.
Cock fighting and dog fighting. Gee, sounds like a lovely place.
He always makes this yankee girl grin.
Amazing, isn’t it? I’ve been following this story and it’s the damndest thing when you think about it. Add to it all the local gossip...
Four houses, likely middle of the night, 8 murdered. At least one seems to have had a chance to put up a fight was found on the floor, but others in bed. Add to that one 4 day old infant, a 6 month old and 3 yrs old. Did they wake up? Were silencers used? This required extensive planning, perfect timing and careful exiting. The door to at least one house was locked when the girl came to do chores.
Did the dogs bark? If not, why? If so, are they far enough away from neighbors, including the other victims that no one heard them?
Went and talked to a friend who used to sell hundreds of them around here. He said it’s not so serious anyone would do any killings over roosters.
I loved the warning that it a big county and a small police force so arm youself. He can’t be everywhere. So honest.
Looky here.
Yeah..I liked that too..sooooo unlike what we normally hear. He seems a good guy.
