At Swords & Dreams Reptile Rescue in West Allis, owner Tom McNeil sells lots of knives of nearly every size and description.
Until this year, though, his line did not include switchblades, "out the fronts" or butterfly knives, all long considered contraband on Wisconsin streets.
His customers kept telling him they would be legal soon, McNeil recalled. "But I've been hearing that for 20 years."
This time, it's true.
In February, Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill that repealed the state's ban on automatic knives and pre-empted all local government efforts to regulate knives by blade length or other characteristics.

I think they will call them “Assault Knives”.
How many clips are in the magazine?
Good for Scott Walker.
Details on appearance and how it opens matter with a knife. If I'm in an area where the victim is likely to be prosecuted for effective self-defense, I'd rather carry a "Hello Kitty" knife. Even a liberal would be embarrassed to claim intent in someone with that knife. Intent really has nothing to do with cosmetics, but democrats think it does.
Don't know what the big deal is with people having automatic knives. The ones with the assist on the blades come out just as fast.
—I suppose that “gun expert” Colorado congresscritter Dina DeGette would suppose that after so many “openings” they are empty and no longer usable—
The only advantage to the autos I can see might be in allowing for a better grip from the beginning, but many of the assisted ones really are amazingly fast opening.
I've toyed with getting a folder with an Emerson "wave" blade, but I'm not sure if I would get along with one.

That’s what they’re called.
“The ones with the assist on the blades come out just as fast. “
They’re scary. Especially to someone who’s never had to think about defending themselves.
Twenty-some years back, I ordered an Italian ‘stiletto’ knife kit. It showed up completely assembled, but needed a drop of WD-40 to get it to flick open fast when the go button was pushed. Fun toy, but more suited to opening mail rather than fighting. The Fairbairn-Sykes IS a good design for such activities, but this ol’ dude ain’t going there...
True story. I was walking along a dirt road and a car with a couple of high school punks drove by, then stopped a few yards ahead, waited a second or two, then burned out, throwing all kinds of dust and crap at me. Being the diplomat I am, I flipped them off and kept walking. The car slammed on the brakes and then backed up to me and the occupants jumped out.
I was carrying a switchblade my brother had picked up during an excursion to Mexico. It was more of a novelty than a weapon. The blade was such junk steel it wouldn’t hold an edge and couldn’t cut compressed air, but I casually pulled it out as the pair of idiots rushed me. When they got close enough, I snapped the blade open and just stared at them. They stopped dead in their tracks and left faster than they came.
There is something pretty intimidating about a switchblade.
***The blade was such junk steel it wouldnt hold an edge ***
Is there a penguin stamped on the blade? I’ve got one of those.
“Can somebody tell what the big deal is about butterfly knives that they would be banned? “
Kind of the assault rifle of knives. They look cool and dangerous.
I have a Tijuana stiletto and a very old mother of pearl handled switchblade, both with useless steel. Last year I got a Lightning OTF knife and have carried it daily. It takes a great edge and holds it. Some knife reviewer was amazed at the quality for $30 or so. Make sure you get the made in Taiwan steel, not the later China made.
Every time I open it around somebody, they jump in surprise. Then they look at it and like it. That initial snap is an attention getter.
No, not that I recall. I lost the knife years ago. And it wasn’t more than a 3-inch blade to begin with. Probably couldn’t have cut a cake with it.
Somewhere I have a Hubectus side flip I bought in Germany years ago. I think I got if for around $80. The last time I looked it up, it was going for $200 or so.
