As Donald Trump hurtles toward the Republican convention, he is on a collision course with the anti-abortion movement a crucial conservative constituency that contends Republicans must own that issue to win a general election.
Leaders of the movement are suspicious, if not outright opposed, to the three-time married billionaire who only recently came to oppose abortion and whose gaffes suggest he does not understand the issue.
The latest flap exploded Thursday after Trump vowed he would "absolutely" change the Republican platform opposing abortion "for the three exceptions" rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother. The platform is silent on exceptions, but anti-abortion groups such as March for Life shot back that Trump's revisions would undermine the party's "solidly pro-life" position.
The suggestion that the platform should weaken its position on the pro-life issue would set back years of hard work in the pro-life movement, said Tom McClusky, vice president of March for Life Action. Add to that the GOP front-runners statements last month that women should be punished for getting illegal abortions and that he doesnt want to change existing law positions his campaign later recanted which are anathema to a movement that portrays itself as supportive of pregnant women and seeks to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
The speed with which he corrected the two gaffes which he rarely does proves that he knows to take the movement seriously.
At the same time, Trump has not toned down his praise of Planned Parenthood, which he says has done very good work for many, many for millions of women despite the fact that the group is reviled by anti-abortion advocates as a seller of baby body parts.

Why is incest always included in these exceptions? I mean incest that is not also rape.
New York values.
Because the "platform" is used as a hammer to break otherwise electable Republicans, that's why.
Yes because the “Republicans” that we have now in office are so republican
Obama got the biggest spending bill of all times passed, through a REPUBLICAN congress......
Generally and unfortunately yes
The left did not get its hold on the country by proposing their extreme agenda up front
Think about it
It starts out small, “for the children” stuff
Then it went into turning every perversion in a “right”
and now we have “black lives matter” basically a hate group
And now we have criminals are good people
If they started out with the later first, they would have shut out decades ago
But they didn’t
They are smart
As for abortion, banning abortion but keeping the three exceptions is a fair compromise, you ban abortion from being a form of “birth control” and women can still chose to have their rapists babies. I know the purist don’t agree with me on this but sometimes you just have make common sense compromises to get the big picture done.
I guess my point is...
We are going their direction...not them coming to ours.
I don’t want argue about the merits in your points about abortion.
My doubt is the left is going to look at our movement away from our positions on abortion...and then suddenly agree with us that partial birth abortion needs to be stopped.
Or if we just “tax the very rich hedge fund managers”...they are not suddenly going to see that we have become “reasonable” and say “ok maybe we need to cut taxes on anyone else.”
That’s not who they are.
They get us or people on our side to give in to something but they never come our direction.
I’m still waiting for “social conservative” George W. Bush to cut a single penny from Planned Parenthood. Perhaps in his 5th term.
I sure would like to know how you’re strong enough to carry that huge Brush you paint with ...:)
Nope.
You are absolutely correct. The pre-born genocidal shedding of innocent blood is not on his website and never has been.
Rape and incest abortions protect the rapists and incestuous. Abortionists are not going to report pregnancies due to rape or incest because they are their investors!
The Biblical judgment for a nation practicing child sacrifice is invasion and conquest. Lamentations was written after that judgment.
Building a wall is medicating symptoms and will not protect from the wrath of God. Nothing will actually as it was not forgiven. He did delay His wrath with repentance by the ruler and his grandson’s revival, but when the nation again took up the practice it was unleashed. Through Babylonians.
I do get where you’re coming from.
>>>1. Changing the partys platform...there was no one calling for this...but just because Trump suggested it...and could lose votes over it suddenly conservatives think its a good idea to change it???
2. Tax the rich????
3. Planned parenthood does some good things????<<<

1. He was asked if the platform should be changed to reflect his position regarding exceptions. It has been his stance since he became a candidate. He simply avoided the Todd Aiken misstep.
Aiken is a good man, but he killed his chance to be in position to do anything at all.
2. Nothing new here. He has said all along that he will close the carried interest loophole. Overall, his tax plan substantially reduces taxes on high income earners. As it should be.
3. I’m in complete disagreement with him regarding Planned Parenthood. It’s a vile organization, that at the very least should have all taxpayer money withdrawn.
I truly pray that Trump can be persuaded that any support for Planned Parenthood should be withdrawn.
Look, I get what you are saying. I am fully pro-life, and I disagree with Trump on the exceptions except life. However, Trump is willing to put pro-life justices on the Supreme Court. This will overturn Roe vs. Wade possibly. If we do that, we can save a lot of the unborn. He is also willing to defund Planned Parenthood as long as they do abortions, which they will. If you don’t vote for him, it helps Hillary. That’s one less vote in her way. She gets elected. What does she do? She stacks the court with pro-aborts. Roe vs. Wade will never be overturned. She’ll probably increase funds for Planned Parenthood and expand abortion access any way she can. The pro-life movement could be set back majorly, if not permanently with her Supreme Court. We have a chance to save a lot of unborn babies, not all, but a lot. If there was a fire and a room full of children and you get some of the children out but not all, you would go in, right? Of course. You wouldn’t let some of the children die because you can’t save all of them.
I know you are referring to Cruz, but Cruz, despite giving lip service to not supporting the rape/incest exception, then proceeded to tell Megyn Kelly that it could be turned over to the states with the overturn of Roe vs. Wade and that states could then decide if they want to make that exception. Cruz could have told Megyn he was for a personhood amendment but didn’t. His position of tossing it back the states is the same as Trump’s position.
“Obama got the biggest spending bill of all times passed, through a REPUBLICAN congress......”
Than would be a RINO congress.
Example
Barrasso (R-WY)Boozman (R-AR)
Chambliss (R-GA)Blunt (R-MO)Coats (R-IN)
Cochran (R-MS)Corker (R-TN)
Collins (R-ME Cornyn (R-TX)
Hatch (R-UT)Hoeven (R-ND)Isakson (R-GA)
Johanns (R-NE)McConnell (R-KY)
Murkowski (R-AK)Wicker (R-MS)
Sessions (R-AL)Thune (R-SD)
Shelby (R-AL)
Notice no Cruz?
But you have to change the direction, doing a total 180 will freak the general public out, but doing a 45 and no one will balk (the extremists will, but who cares about them). And enough 45s and we have a complete 180 and the public would just accept it. (that is what the left has done to use over the past three to four decades)
most people even agree that abortion should be illegal, but most people believe the three exceptions should be included as well.
I am not saying we should change the platform from 100% ban on abortion, however if a bill comes along that states abortion will be banned except for the three exceptions, then we should support it. It would be a huge victory for our side and a compromise that the general public would agree with
“..As a practical matter we are not going to ban abortion in cases of rape and incest.”
So what? That doesn’t mean Trump should be in favor of killing an innocent unborn baby.
The unborn child is still a precious life who does not deserve to be sucked out, burned to death with saline or ripped apart.
