Heilemann: 'In His Gut, Trump's a Social Liberal'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 04/21/2016 3:11:30 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

From bathrooms to abortions, John Heilemann believes that in his heart, Donald Trump is a social liberal. Heilemann made his assertion on today's With All Due Respect in the context of discussing Trump's comments on a Today town hall this morning in which he was critical of the North Carolina transgender bathroom law, and said he'd have no problem letting Caitlyn Jenner choose any bathroom.

Heilemann: "Trump is probably, I think in his gut, a social liberal. I think his position on abortion, for instance, the ["very pro-choice"] position he held for most of his life, is the real position . . . I think on this issue he's like most Manhattanites or most New Yorkers: he's basically a social liberal."

I actually don’t think Trump thinks much about social/cultural policies. This is all new to him.

I actually like Donald Trump but it's become pretty clear that Trump is winging it when shares his opinions on hot button issues. They just don't seem all that well thought out or based on any discernible conservative principles.

But yes, I will vote for Donald Trump if he's the Republican nominee since Crooked Hillary as the successor to Obama is unthinkable.

Fantastic! This will make the General Election a walk in the park! Donald Trump will be the only un-indited liberal running! ;-)

I think the question that needs to be asked is, are social issues the most important part of this election cycle? I think it needs to be part of the platform, but illegal immigration, protecting our borders and fixing the global problems Obama caused are 1,2,3, on the list.

I think what a lot of people like about Trump is his position on illegal immigration. This has caused more problems over the last 8 years and the spigot needs to be closed.

We shouldn’t mistake Trump’s conservatism or lack thereof for his popularity and message about making America great again. What people understand is Trump can fix many of America’s financial problems, a message Romney could not gain traction on.

I like Cruz, but I will gladly vote for Trump if he is the nominee. And it is inevitable he will be, but the string has to play itself out.

As a businessman, he’s been distressed at national/international policies, not social issues.

Doesn’t that make him part of the problem?

As mentioned above, I’m the author of the article: governs=Finkelstein. I’m not NeverTrump, but found Heilemann’s comments noteworthy. People are free to make of them what they want.

Believe it or not, Trump has not spent his life navel gazing and reading books on going over every political issue in the world to form an opinion. He's not a policy wonk like frankly most of us are. I think people have a hard time understanding a person who is DIFFERENT... Who has spent the time WE have spent on FR and reading and discussing politics actually DOING things and forming political opinions in the realm he LIVED in and had to spend virtually every waking hour in: the real world. I'm betting he hasn't spent a lot of time thinking about gay rights. But I bet he knows a whole lot about govt regulation, bureaucracy and taxation, about worthless politicians, and about how business and jobs get screwed by Americans who hate our country giving it away via immigration and screw-America trade agreements.

That's who we need as president now. Because if we don't STOP this sh!t there ain't going to BE a country to argue in. We will be under the world government like TPP and the UN and EU and Ted's NORTH AMERICAN UNION where the ELITE will TELL us what to think and what bathroom to use, food to eat, etc. GLOBALISM must be stopped or we lose our sovereignty and cease to exist. Are these other issues important? Yes. But the NATION is at war, under attack by invaders who are being let in by traitorous Washington politicians, while sending our money and jobs to other countries and attempting to ELIMINATE our borders.

No borders=no country.

GLOBALISM is the hill we die on if we try to take every hill during a hot war with the forces of Globalism. Then there IS no USA.

Reagan was a rat at one time, but he wised up.
Why can’t you people accept that Donald wised up too?

Frankly, I WANT THAT DANG WALL BUILT TO KEEP OUT ILLEGAL INVADERS WHO RAPE,ROB,AND MURDER US- (Texas alone has been the victim of almost 600,00 crimes by illegals) AND SPONGE OFF OUR COUNTRY. AND STOP/INVESTIGATE/DEPORT THE DANGEROUS MUZZIES BEING FLOWN IN TO COLONIZE AMERICA BY OBAMA.
IF DONALD DOES THIS, THEN HE’S ONE H*LL OF A PRESIDENT!!!.

(And don’t think if he runs into lawsuits, lengthy time to build it, etc, that he won’t seal the border with enough guards! He will!

Duh. No shyte, Sherlock. It’s abundantly clear that Trump is a blue state liberal posing as a conservative Republican. Just go back to his own announcement, when he said he was “running AS a conservative Republican”. Notice that he did not say, I AM a conservative Republican, but running AS one. Look it up.

What an idiotic comment.

If that’s what old women sound like, then women should rise up and straighten this mess out!

Social issues, ah yes, the favored path of the dems to paint everyone else as bigots/racists/homophobes and Lord knows what else.

Ain’t falling for it - we’re being invaded and weakened everyday so forgive me for not giving a rats a** about bathroomgate nonsense. NC will do whatever it is they are going to do, I don’t live there so I have no say.

Our side is too damn sissified to get this right.

When your house is on fire, you don’t call a plumber to fix the garbage disposal; you call a fireman to put out the fire before it burns your house down.

Immigration, trade, & terrorism are the three fires burning our country down.

While I believe Cruz would make an excellent terrorism fireman, he is in no way an immigration or trade fireman. Those fires will burn as just as brightly as they are now if Cruz becomes president.

I sympathize (and agree) with those concerned about social issues, but these were long time developing problems, the solutions will take a long time to develop also. The next president (Cruz or otherwise) will have minimal (if any) impact in turning them back.

Our national house is on fire; immigration, trade, and terrorism are the fires burning it. Trump is far from the ideal candidate, but he is the ONLY fireman in the race.

If not Trump, who?
