Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.
Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.
"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"
"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."
Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

He, or any conservative president, could stop siccing the DOJ on states and localities which pass laws to hinder the ready availability of abortion, for starters. Stop trying to force religious organisations to support it in their healthcare plans, etc.
A conservative president (nor would a great wheeler and dealer) wouldn’t just concede the whole position from the get-go.
And it’s a nice touch to call people “religious zealots” on a forum which states its support of conservative Christians.
And repeating “St Cruz” without laying out a position on issues doesn’t enhance the validity of your comments. It sounds like a cheerleader, “So and so, he’s our man, if he can’t beat them nobody can”. Silly.
There are issues at stake, the soul of the erstwhile conservative party is at stake, opposition to the left’s culture war is at stake, but this is all to be conceded. We have to become like the left to defeat the left. Sounds like a great strategy, for a leftist.
Do you work for Hillary or Bernie?
The platform is meaningless without the ability to enforce it!
As President, Trump can't do anything about abortion.
In other words, nothing.
I notice that Hussein has had a great influence in social issues, for the left. It wasn’t until he “evolved” on sodomite mirage, that the SC and the entire country followed, or was forced to follow, suit.
A Trump supporter is the last person to have the moral ground to demand consistency.
I hate abortion as much as anyone but as a man I cannot imagine the horror of a pregnancy caused by being raped. Living hell...
Like taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood? Oh wait, Trump wants to keep that.
How about insurance mandates? Oh wait, Trump wants to keep those too.
How about taxes? Oh wait, Trump wants to raise taxes on hedge fund managers.
How about amnesty? Oh wait, Trump wants to expedite the return of deported illegals back into the US, granting them legal status.
Oh really? Tell me, what did I say, that was a lie? What was paraphrased? What was misleading?
Did Trump not say he was against the NC law prohibiting guys from going into womens restrooms, (where they’ll literally be right there with your wives, moms, sisters, and daughters)? Did he not say he would let the mentally unstable Bruce Jenner, now pretending to be something he is not, pee where ever he wanted to point his penis, in Trumps tower?
Did he not say he agrees with raising taxes on the rich?
Did he not propose to make an amendment to the GOP platform on abortion to be pro-killing babies, no matter what the situation?
Please. Either you can’t read, you can’t comprehend simple English, or you are so far off your meds that you can’t understand simple truth, when it’s laid out easily for you. Maybe all three.
I will give you this, those comments weren’t mine. I snagged them from Steve Deace. But regardless of who said them first, the statements are true.
We Trump supporters understand what a President can and cannot do.
Oklahoma Senate Passes Bill to Become 3rd to Ban Abortions on Babies With Down Syndrome
Step by step and never national news.
He just followed the trend.
I never thought I’d see the day on FR when pro-life conservatives could be called “religious zealots” as an insult. But if that’s the choice, I’ll stand with the sheep instead of the goats.
It amazes me the simplicity of the “anti-Trump” arguments on the form today.
.... Is commonly said that when you are a hammer everything looks like a nail...
I spent 20 years of my life trying to help women who are in problem pregnancies and who were considering abortion To either change their mind on the abortion or find Christian families to place their children for adoption.... 20 years
There is no one in this form who is more pro-life than I am...no one
... That being said Abortion since 1973 has been and will continue to be the law of the land. It’s a disgrace ...a Genocide
.... But again look at our end game Which has to be to put enough people on the Supreme Court to overturn the 1973 disastrous decision. Will Trump do that? Who knows! And before you begin to criticize that “” fact””... Give a quick look at our past “conservative” presidents and what they’ve put on the court !
.... What Donald Trump said here Is a huge move in the right direction from where we are at now or what the alternative democratic presidential candidate will do!!!
I challenge so many of you To stop thinking in “soundbites” Think of the endgame yard by yard to Look at the long-term and stop being the proverbial hammer looking for a nail...:)
Hmm...Trump thinks it’s OK to kill babies and let perverts use the bathrooms of our sons and daughters. I for one am NOT ok with that.
St. Cruz supporters seem to get confused on the abortion issue, they claim it is murder, but don't want to actually punish the mother for murder-why is that?
That's a damning indictment of Donald Trump AND "most Americans".
The platform is meaningless without the ability to enforce it!
A platform is a statement of ideals. There's nothing to enforce. Putting a bang mark at the end of your assertion doesn't make it valid.
As President, Trump can't do anything about abortion.
The President appoints Judges and Justices, and has considerable influence on how Federal funds are spent, and has substantial influence on legislation. Don't try to make excuses for Trump, here. He's just plain wrong. Deal with it.
John 15:18
Wear it with pride.
[I am willing to outlaw it as murder and punish the mother]
So you believe it is murder?
You miss the entire freaking point. Trump is so inept he manages to alienate pro abortion women and pro life women on the same issue. Politically he’s a dolt.
