Donald Trump might have rolled to 60 percent of the Republican vote in New York Tuesday night, but he came in a distant third in the big scheme of things nonetheless. Keep in mind, this is the candidate and the campaign that constantly pout about one-man one-vote and popular vote totals.
They threaten to both call the lawyers about this concept and to riot in Cleveland over this. Thus, by Trump's own standards, Trump got thrashed in New York. Both Hillary and Bernie Sanders destroyed Trump in raw vote totals.
I'm not saying Trump didn't win the N.Y. Republican primary big. He did. I'm not even arguing that Trump is cheating to get 90% of the delegates with only 60% of the vote – although I could do just that, again using Trump's standards and Trump's own words and Team Trump's talking points. It would be easy. All I'm pointing out is that even in a yuuuuuuuge win, the numbers put the lie to the Donald Trump campaign. This was his best night so far, and yet the seeds of disaster are obvious for any who would but pay attention.
That popular vote total should bring the pom-pom clan back to Earth.
Remember that Trump is supposedly the man who will by his mere presence put blue states, even New York, into play. The message board trolls drone endlessly about this. As do some websites and talk show hosts – not to mention the Trump surrogates. Again, by their own self-imposed standard, Trump really got humiliated Tuesday night.
Consider: Hillary Clinton tallied over a million votes. Over three quarters of a million New York voters "felt the Bern." Trump was just over half a million. You say, "Okay okay, but it's New York."

Yes, there are less registered Republicans in NY than registered Democrats. Both needed to have been registered months ago to vote in the respective party primaries.
The primary elections do not reflect what would be the result of the general election in NY.
Trump will win New York in the general election.

Correct. It was a closed primary. There are way more registered Dems in NY than Repubs.
How many independents will vote for Trump in the general election? That’s the key question. He may get enough of them to defeat Hillary.
You assume that bern's voters will go to the bitch, not so. There will be millions of cross over white, working demonRATs.
NY will be in play and PA is a shoe in for Trump.
Trump got 524,932 votes. Romney got 103,142 in the NY State primary.
And that’s not including what he would have gotten if this was open primary.

Mitt Romney and Donald Trump couldn't be more different. It seems bizarre that you're trying to draw any conclusions by using Romney's numbers to predict Trump's.

It's not a comparison of just candidates. It's a comparison of choices of candidates.
The choice in '12 was Obama vs Mitt. The choice in '16 would be Hillary vs. Trump.
The number of voters who voted for Obama instead of Mitt in '12 and who would switch over to vote for Trump instead of Hillary would be small.

Enrollment statistics don’t mean much in NY. A lot of NY Democrats are DINOs who vote like Independents in the general.
I might add that a lot of NY voters enroll in a party only because they know that’s how you get to vote in primaries. And most of the interesting primary races in NY are between Democrats. So this inflates Democrat enrollment. Getting those votes in the fall is another matter.
Just so. Despite his pretenses, Cruz is no real conservative, as he pretends, but an establishment GOPer. He’d rather give the White House to Hillary than let Trump win, because Trump would deprive him and his pals of their wheels and deals.
Another reason to enroll Democrat is to be able to get in on patronage. The Democrat bosses still want to know: Are you a Democrat? And do you contribute? Or will you?
In 2008, the last time we had an open presidential contest, the NY State Republican primary saw 670,000 votes while the Democrats totaled 1.89 million.
So, to put in in perspective, compared to 2008 the level of D participation in the primary was roughly the same (slightly lower, but NY has lost population since 2008) while the R participation was up over 25% from 2008 (despite that population decline), and more than quadruple 2012.
As has been pointed out, NY's primaries are closed, so the relative raw numbers are no surprise there there are far more registered Democrats than Republicans in NY. But party affiliation doesn't matter in the general election, which is why Trump's crossover appeal will be felt in full force there.
In 2012 NYers cast 7.1 million votes for president. I expect that number to be higher in 2016 and a lot of them will be pulling an R level for the first time for Trump. And that's why NY is in play for November.
