(AFP) He is the brother of jihadist Mohamed Merah, who four years ago killed three soldiers and four Jews, but in his extremist, anti-Semitic family it is Abdelghani who is seen as the black sheep.
Abdelghani Merah has light brown eyes, a shaven head and a surname immediately associated with terror in France, but after losing everything because of his brother's acts he has found a calling: de-radicalizing youngsters drawn to jihad.
In an interview with AFP, he says he will never forget the morning in March 2012 when he turned on the television and recognized the street where his brother lived, now crawling with security forces.
It hit him that the man who had been riding around on a scooter, shooting soldiers in the southern French city of Toulouse and nearby Montauban, and then a rabbi and three Jewish children in Toulouse a few days later, was his younger brother Mohamed.
"I rushed to the scene, in a panic. The police thought I wanted to attack them - but I wanted to help them negotiate with Mohamed," he said.
Mohamed was killed in a firefight with the police after a stand-off lasting about 30 hours.
None of these events took Abdelghani, who is around 40, by surprise.
He accuses his Algerian parents of sowing "fertile ground" for radicalization and anti-Semitism among his brothers and his sister Souad.
"My mother always said that Arabs are born to hate Jews. And my father thought that Palestinians were right to carry out suicide bombings and that the Israelis got what they deserved."

I doubt you’ll get many to believe that
Leaving Satan’s political death cult altogether is the only way out. You can’t reform evil.
Evil people can be, but it needs a sterner goodness than an abstract kumbaya philosophy.
if this guy is a moslem, then he is still a terrorist. He may be a deep sleeper right now, but his chosen religion commands him to kill non-moslems.
If he’s a Moslem and combating Islamist militancy, then he’s an apostate. Whether the one or the other ultimately wins out remains to be seen. It could be Taqiyya, but there are instances of others doing the same and doing so sincerely.
Think Professor Snape from the Potter series, playing double agent.
As far as I’m concerned, the Green Prince’s conversion to Christianity is suspect. In the book, he says that he baptized himself at the beach by going into the water with his Christian girlfriend, and dunking his head under. He keeps his Islamic name, and makes strange statements on a Christian radio station. So perhaps the Green Prince is practicing Taqiyya, just like Odumbo. On the other hand, maybe not. Same here.
“He accuses his Algerian parents of sowing “fertile ground” for radicalization”
That’s ONE of the key contributors. First, second and third generation, born and bred in western countries, very much influenced by their (traditional) parents at home.
BUT, nothing is universal. some do and some don’t.
Same time or later, they’re influenced by their community, often very receptive to be infiltrated by the likes of AQ and IS, etc. This is further reinforced by mainstream western media and social media networks. All in all, they end up very confused, pulled in different directions, and alienated.
In the first instance, this comment from another thread almost has it:
“Most of the French problem comes because of the former French Colonies like Algeria. Tens of thousands of Muslim soldiers fought for France. We allow foreigners to fight in our Armed Forces. Its a way to citizenship.
Germany and England are the problem, more than France. England isnt England anymore and Germany has opened the floodgates. France is trying to fight back since Sarkozys time.”

Exactly. The WRONG move is to cede to Muslim demands. They either assimilate or they are sent home. France does not allow women’s faces to be covered if they work in a public office.
There are problem areas in France as there are here in the states. I’ve never had a problem there and do know many Muslims. That is not to say I find them all agreeable any more than I find all of ANY ethnic groups agreeable. The great danger is ignoring the differences. I do NOT approve of trying to make Western Children “appreciate’ Sharia law!!!
Massive importation of Muslims should be avoided at all costs. I agree that at this time, ALL Muslims should be barred from entry into the States. The U.N. certainly will do nothing to VET them and we can’t do it either. Trump is right.
I’m all for stopping immigration or ‘importation’ of immigrants into the country. Muslim or not. There is an influx of non-muslim immigrants from South East Asia in paticular (that’s what Trump if elected POTUS needs to stop too).
Nowadays, the U.N. parades as a humanitarian entity (that’s all they can do), which is fine so long as they do their work inside war-affected countries.
