You know, there are things that are “ok” by the “rules,” but which people know just aren’t right. There are legitimate tax deductions, but there is something wrong when people who run companies into the ground get rich doing it.
I guess my point is that what Cruz did may have been 100% legal, but does not pass the smell test with the vast majority of voters. They just know, to quote Chris Rock, “That ain’t right” that a guy gets all the delegates from a state that never even has a primary or even a caucus.
And Rush can explain this 1000 ways from Sunday and people will just know it’s not right. It’s like the ATM fees thing: sure, maybe someone at Citibank can justify it, but it just doesn’t look right to the average person struggling to get by to pay more money to get their own money out of the bank while the CEOs are worrying about their next vacay to Cancun.
Cruz would have been so smart-—and it just may have saved his campaign-—to have called Trump immediately after CO and said, “Donald, I know what we did was perfectly fine by the rules, but I agree the voters don’t like it. So let’s agree to request a statewide vote or convention before the national GOP convention. We will each abide by whatever comes.” Now, 1) I doubt such a thing would have been arranged, 2) I’m not sure Trump would have gone for it, but Cruz could have had members of the press present when he made the offer and I think he would have come out smelling like a rose regardless of the outcome.

Cruz admitted this. He said he didn’t cross Trump early because, in his words, “he didn’t want to get kneecapped.”
Well, a) that’s cowardly, and b) while it did leave him the last man standing against Trump, he still ends up where the rest of ‘em are, on the delegate ash heap.

Yeah. He’s kind of furious, isn’t he? But the caller was excellent. I think if Rush would just occasionally admit that Cruz’s off-putting personality was the key to people believing he’s dishonest and/or capable of devious behavior it would go a long way to mollify people. But he can’t. He thinks that Cruz can sell his personality to delegates! He has the personality of the worst used car salesman you’ve ever met, to use a total cliché. And that’s why people think he must be using other methods to get ahead.
PLUS: He’s a Harvard Lawyer!

Nothing and won’t be until he discloses what happened with your ‘secret meeting’.
But it’s not ordinary Republican voters who elect these people. It’s people who are active in the local party. So maybe you can fault people for not getting more involved.
