Target Corp. made it clear that transgender people in its stores are welcome to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity.
The statement Tuesday by the Minneapolis-based retailer comes amid debates in many state legislatures over restricting public restroom use to the sex listed on a persons birth certificate.
While many of those conversations have centered around restrooms in public schools and government buildings, Target appears to be one of the first big-box retailers to take a proactive stance in declaring its position on the matter when it comes to its own restrooms.
While they may not be technically public, restrooms in stores are often the most easily accessible and widely available options outside of peoples homes and workplaces.
Targets position also extends to its fitting rooms.
Inclusivity is a core belief at Target, the company said in a statement on its corporate website. Its something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.
Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said it is not a new policy, but the retailer wanted to clarify its position given the questions it has received from both customers and employees amid the national debate. Executives sent e-mail to store leaders earlier this week to convey the message.
Its a restatement of a policy, she said. Its just us being very overt in stating it.

Memo to MYself...do not use Target!
Leni
Be a damn shame if some woman came running out of the bathroom, screaming that a “transgender” assaulted her in there.
Yup.
A damn shame.
If a woman identifies as a man, how would she use the urinal?
Boom!
LOL!
All these stores are insane. Women are the chief shoppers in most of them but they don’t give a damn. It’s puzzling. Happily, I’ve always avoided public restrooms unless it’s an emergency.
Target already is in big trouble. Last year they closed ALL of their Canadian stores. Their US stores are barely even making it. Ever since their security breach back in 2013 I think, theyve been teetering.
This will be the end.
My family is out officially after this.
...
But JC Penney’s homosexual makeover worked out so well.
Why is this so important to Obama and Biden.Who was that offended as a Transgender?
Salvation Army stores have great stuff at cheaper prices and you’re actually supporting worthy people rather than the CEO.
:)
Target will have a multi-million dollar lawsuit on their hands and boatloads of bad publicity if (when) a woman is sexually assaulted (or worse) in one of Target’s bathrooms or dressing rooms.
Insanity.
FYI for those of you not wishing to experience problems in the rest rooms..
There is a single/family restroom normally by the pharmacy. You can be alone in it and lock the door.
However, I did recently snag a $700 Black Rivet leather jacket at Gwill for $20, so there’s that.
A smart retailer will tear out their restroom facilities and put in multiple, separate, single person, private, efficiency toilets. Same with schools.
This is the perfect opportunity for men to use the Target women’s bathroom and treat it like a men’s room. The women will be screaming to put and end to it in short order.
Coming soon will be a lawsuit (maybe real, maybe made up) where a woman feels threatened by a man (claiming to be a woman) using the same restroom. Millions paid to the victim, courtesy of Target shareholders. Do you really want to invest your hard earned money in this company?
If they really meant it, they would propose just one public bathroom.
I’ll never forget - a few years ago our local Target in Rochester, NY was the first store in the area to ban Salvation Army bell ringers at Christmastime. I haven’t shopped there since.
When some girls are raped in Target’s bathrooms will they shoulder their responsibility or will they try to weasel out by saying they warned the public?
