The meeting occurred just a few days before the primary in New York, home to a large number of Catholics.

Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Sen.Bernie Sanders was invited to Vatican City to make a speech about income inequality."No, if I was really being political, I'd be in New York City right now and not in Rome," Sanders said. "For me, the issues that the pope is talking about are issues that I've been talking about for many, many years."
Sanders is a candidate for the Presidency. By definition anything that he does that the public knows about and most everything he does that they do not know about is political by definition.
Saying something like that shows how stupid he thinks the public is.
Going to Rome and meeting with the Pope is a defacto attempt to have the Catholic voter to assume that the Pope endorses his socialist views. Which apparently this Pope does.

He was either seeking absolution or a confessional audience with him then, right?

It was not political? How many Jewish guys from Vermont has the Pope met with since he became pope and for what reason.

The Pope should butt out of our politics....remember the big concerns when John Kennedy was running that the Pope would exert undue influence on our President and our politics? Denied of course, but here it is.

If Bernie wants to see the Pope for confession, he should wait until after the election.
