At the top of Vladimir Putins annual call-in show on Thursday, the hours-long telethon during which Putin takes questions from ordinary Russians, Ekaterina Chernenko had a plea for the Russian president.
Speaking by video-call, the resident of the Siberian city Omsk asked if Putin could have the potholed roads in her town fixed, complaining that local officials were doing nothing.
In front of cameras broadcasting the exchange across Russia, Putin agreed with her, saying that the problem had gotten worse generally and noted that it needed to be solved.
Within hours, Omsks local authorities announced they had laid 4,000 square meters of new pavement in a single day and poured out 370 tons of asphalt. The citys mayor appeared on TV to promise they were working night and day on it.
The frantic road-building in Omsk was just one of example of officials across Russia scurrying to fix local issues after they were presented to Putin during his call-in show and that the Russian leader had noted ominously he would be looking into. Criminal cases were opened, delayed wages paid, construction projects halted and launched, all just hours after people mentioned them to Putin on-air.

Our Ahole would sooner tax us by the mile like in Illinois. Pathetic.
Shovel ready.
Shame is a powerful motivator.
He put the conversation on the loud speaker for all his employees to hear and informed me of the same.
Within an hour, a crew was at the house and the wires were buried. Now it was safe for my lawnmower guy to get his job done.
Sometimes the big boss doesn't know....so tell him.
Shame? THe guy fixed an issue . Our ahole wouldnt even bother.
Trump makes the point about airports in the Middle East having runways that are like glass then coming back to the US where they have potholes. Think about that next time you fly.
“How a real leader governs his country”
ummm....you think he didn’t know about all these problems before the talk show?
Pot holes are a boon to the car repair biz. This is unfair labor practice at its worst!
You are kidding, right? This Putin-vision is a scam. Russia is hardly a prospering state. This is all a means to promote the acceptance of total authority wielded by Putin.
A lot less issues with freezing and ice in the Middle East.
Please explain how obama is better.?
So if Putin doesnt fix the roads , in your head, hes a bad guy. If he does fix the roads, hes also a bad guy.
Please explain how our country is in any way better.
Its not.
“Shame is a powerful motivator.”
Shame? They’re not worried about shame. They’re worried that Putin’s eyes (and henchman) will start focusing on them and they’ll end up shot dead and dumped in a hole somewhere.

BINGO! Yet look at how many people fall for it even here at FR. It’s sad. . . and a little worrisome.
Putin doesn’t care one bit about ISIS. He cares about keeping Assad in power. He wants access to Syrian ports on the Mediterranean. That is it. It is classic Soviet doctrine, to mitigate choke points bottling up the Russian Navy.
Still, we should have such a program in this nation as well. The president could use the Bully Pulpet to focus on things that need to be done. The bottom line—the roads got fixed in Russia.
We know what they area

The U.S. today isn’t what it used to be in the 1980’s or the 1990’s. So, people admire bits and pieces they see even in or from Russia. Can’t blame Putin for everything.
Its true. With Crimea as well. But the same can be said of us. We want those ports out of his hands and will tolerate ISIS (or whoever) as long as it gets Assad out of power and makes that happen.
I don't hate Putin, but this is NOT how a country should be governed. The woman should be able to call her local mayor or town board, or run against them, with her local taxes uses to pay for local problems. That's how the USA used to be run. all-powerful Fed.gov makes us more like Russia every day.
Centralized government is the source of ALL tyranny
“Still, we should have such a program in this nation as well.”
I’m all for U.S. citizens being able to directly address complaints to the U.S. President on television.
“The president could use the Bully Pulpet to focus on things that need to be done. The bottom linethe roads got fixed in Russia.”
No, remember, they were fixed in ONE city. And this is the U.S. We have a federal system. Potholes in Rochester, Minnesota and none of the President’s damn business. Let the local municipality handle it. If they don’t, vote them out. I don’t want a dictatorship - even a “benign” one that fixes potholes.
