The Citadel is considering a request from an admitted student that she be allowed to wear a hijab in keeping with her Muslim faith, a move that would be an unprecedented exception to the school’s longstanding uniform requirements.
If the request for the traditional Muslim hair covering is granted, it apparently would be the first exception made to the Citadel’s uniform, which all cadets at the storied public military college in South Carolina are required to wear at nearly all times. (At beaches, for example, college rules stipulate that, “Cadets will change into appropriate swimwear upon arrival and change back into uniform when departing.”) A spokeswoman said that to her knowledge, in its nearly 175-year history, the school has never granted a religious, or other, accommodation that resulted in a change to the uniform.
As word spread on social media, students, alumni and others responded strongly to the idea of an exception being made at an institution where uniformity, discipline and adherence to rules are defining values, where loyalty to the corps is paramount and individual preferences are trivial.
That the first exception might be for a Muslim student was an additional provocation for some — and welcome symbolism for others — in the midst of a national discussion about Islam in U.S. culture.

They could have disbanded. That would have required honor though.
I am just appalled. I will never set foot on that campus again if they accede to this calamitous affront to the dignity and memory of anyone who has ever worn their uniform.
Who makes this decision? The administration? The SC Legislature? The Governor?
Fie on all of them should they consent to this.

Enough of this catering to the muzzies! They know the rules when they apply to college, to get jobs, etc. Either take it or leave it. Obey the rules and laws or go elsewhere. This IS America, after all!
I am no expert, but what exactly makes the Hijab a “religious” article instead of a cultural article? I thought it was primarily a middle-eastern thing, making it cultural rather than religious. But I could be wrong. Do Muslims in China and Malaysia and Philippines wear the Hijab?
1995 was a bitter year for many Citadel men.
It’s a waste of time and money to have split tails there taking slots for good men. Kick out all women.

Given the inferior status of girls and women in Islam, how can she be going to a military oriented university in the first place???

My father was a Citadel man. I went to VMI.
Enough is enough. There is no more compromise possible with Southern Military Colleges.
Do not compromise any further. If it is forced upon you, stop pretending. it’s over.
Ah, remember when The Citadel was a men’s college preparing men for a career in the service?
Those were the days - now long gone.
That country is gone; now the military is for those who took it over. Let them go die for it...
The Citadel did not want to admit women - but the Department of Defense said they would lose ROTC if they did not. This will happen again - they have no choice!
I went their once, back when they were still proud of their heritage. Now, they are just part of the government.
Oh, well.
