The Maine Department of Health and Human Services announced on Monday that it expects to surpass last year's record number of uncovered welfare fraud.
"We're seeing an awful lot of welfare fraud," Director of Fraud Operations Tom Roth told WCSH-TV. "We definitely have more calls coming in than we have people to handle. Having the support from the state and the public is paramount, I think, to our success."

AUGUSTA, Maine They were at smoke shop ATMs when they used their welfare cards to withdraw cash. At race tracks. At tattoo parlors. Even at Disney World-area resorts in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
One example after another of apparent spending by Maine's welfare recipients was contained in data released by the state last week.
Lawmakers immediately called it misuse. Abuse. Fraud. link
I wonder how much is perpetrated by the Somali population.

How does one ‘recover’ body fat? Make soap?
Uncovering is one thing, getting back taxpayers money is something else.
Wait. How can this be, since Nancy P said they had already cut the budget to the bone and couldn’t cut another nickel? Oh, they can cut plenty.
Even if they don’t recover the money, just stopping future fraud would be significant. Wish they would do this in Texas. Too bad it is only one state and one governor.
The answer is quite simple. They carefully researched which states had the most generous free stuff plans and settled there. They are a lot smarter than the people who voted in governments which doled out these benefits.
If Maine cracks down too hard, look for a lot of them moving to Minnesota.
It sounds like fraud and grand theft to me.
I daresay in some states you could have 4k 3D moving images and 5.1 surround sound documenting fraud and theft....and government wouldn’t lift a finger.
I live in Minnesota. The guvmint will deny it. Nevertheless, I think they encourage this kind of fraud and grand theft.
We aren't big on responsible citizenry in this state.
It's also Obama's diversity joke on lily-white Maine. He ordered USCIS to settle them there.
Five Somali refugees in Maine carrying identical bags of freebies.
They also registered as Democrats......counts for 50 votes when you
add in the multiple identities registered.
I read Gov Dayton’s astonishng interview the other day in which he shrugged off a mass exodus of the educated/employed/productive, simply saying ‘people can live where they wish.’
They’ll never admit it but lefties really do believe that to print money is to create something of worth.
THERE IS NO DTETERANT, we have to make a few examples to get the message across and to get control of it
Now, now.
All cultures, races & religions are equal.
Now me see...many Black Muslims from Somali moved to Maine specifically because Maine has the highest welfare payout.
I remember reading about a town in Georgia where Somali refugees were settled. The town woke up one morning and asked, "Where did the Somali's go."
Well, they went to Maine.
Can’t speak with any authority on Maine, but I do know the ELCA were enthusiastic allies in Minnesota’s colonization.
Welfare fraud is something that really really upsets me. I hate it when people steal or take undo advantage of the welfare of others. Then too, they think they’re entitled to do that.
Time to begin arresting bureaucrats who allow taxpayer money to be used in fraud cases.
Will cause them to err on the side of NOT granting welfare rather than the current err on the side of granting it.
Welfare should never be a right, but a privilege.
There are about 10,000 Somalis in Maine. The state’s population is 1,329,000 so about 0.007% of the state’s population is from Somalia.
The 2010 Census showed Maine to be 95% white, 1% black, 1% Asian, .6% American Indian, 1% Hispanic/Latino, and 1.6% two or more races.
OK, now give us the Under 20 demographic percentages.
