Correct. We already know that Cruz has Cruz-loyal trojan horse delegates sitting in as delegates who are bound to vote for Trump on the first nomination ballot. But they are not bound to vote on the RULES in a way that is loyal to Trump — they can vote on the rules any damn way they choose. I’m guessing that means they can even change the 1237 rule and make it a 1400 rule, if they know they have 1400 Cruz-loyal delegates and trojan horses in place.

All delegate votes will be counted on the first ballot, even for candidates who have suspended or dropped out, in accordance with each state’s party rules. Judging from past conventions, there will be a few mischievous votes for non-candidates.

Rule 40b is intended to stop minor candidates from wasting time with speeches and floor celebrations.

You're right, that's not likely regarding changing the rule to 1100. But it is certainly possible if all the #NeverTrump delegates join together to change the rule to 1400, thereby blocking Trump from winning on the first ballot... and allowing them all to flip to Cruz on the second ballot.

If Trump and Cruz split the remaining delegates, they will enter the convention with:

Trump: 1154 (-83)
Cruz: 920 (-317)

If Trump offers Kasich the VP slot, he will pick up 66 delegates**, reducing his margin to 17.

Can Trump convince 17 uncommitted delegates to vote for him? A potential president has a lot of carrots to dangle in front of people. There’s no doubt he could close that gap.

** It’s my understanding that the Ohio rules state that if the winner (Kasich) drops out, then all his delegates go to the 2nd place finisher (in this case Trump). So, the only thing Kasich has to do to force the Ohio delegation to vote for Trump on the 1st ballot is to officially drop out of the race before the actual 1st ballot at the convention. Would Kasich do that to become VP? In a heartbeat.

Cruz’s only hope is to block Trump on a 1st ballot. That probably also means offering Kasich the VP slot. So, it’s really comes down to what Kasich thinks.

1) Does Kasich think he will have a better chance winning with Trump or Cruz?

2) Does Kasich think Cruz can secure the nomination after the 1st ballot (remember, nobody else will probably promise Kasich the VP slot; if Kasich believes the convention will go with not-Cruz after the first ballot, then his best (only) chance to become VP is to back Trump.

No matter how you do the math, it looks like Trump will enter the convention with a gap small enough that it can be bridged with Kasich & carrots.

Trump is not entitled to the nomination unless and until he reaches the magic number, and neither is Cruz........and in fact the distance between the two candidates in delegates will matter if neither wins the golden ticket...So it would be on to convention where it all changes...and that will be a wild ride, one that Trump could not and cannot do without heavy hitters like the "Fixer".......makes you wonder about Trumps so called "deal making skills" are when he doesn't even show for the fight nor cares about the rules of the game... as in Colorado...and Wisc.

Interesting is that Lincoln would not have been nominated if they said that the one with the highest votes would win......even at Convention He was 'a distant' second to William Seward on the first ballot and actually prevailed on the third ballot.

If Trump supporters bolt the November election, because they feel they were screwed at the convention, it will affect more than just the presidency. GOP Senators, congressmen, governors—EVERY contest down the line will be in jeopardy due to low GOP turnout. They may have decided their options are:

1) lose the presidency with non-Trump AND lose the down ballot contests

2) lose the presidency with Trump, but win the down ballot contests

Running off part of your base over the presidential nominee has bigger ramifications than just the presidential election.

As has been pointed out, the GOP establishment could live with a Hillary presidency. What the can’t live with is losing everything else: the senate, the house, governorships, etc...

They won’t even consider splitting until the second vote at convention...this is where the GOP could slide their guy in and neither of them will let that happen.

I hadn’t thought about a rule change to INcrease the required share of delegates. It’s possible, but why? We’d end up even more torn apart, like the Dems in 1924 (when 2/3 was required to nominate).

It has been pointed out by more dispassionate observers that a candidate who gets close will benefit from bandwagon and unity effects. Uncommitted and released delegates will put him over the top.

During the first ballot, there are ways to allow some delegates to ‘correct’ their votes as the outcome becomes clear.

A lot of the GOP-E blather is a psy-op to try to get Trump to go third party or do something disqualifyingly stupid like endorse violence against delegates before the convention.

The GOP has already figured in some of the Trump supporters leaving. It’s not enough ‘leverage’ for Trump, which is what he’s now using his voters for, in fact many do not believe it’s a matter of polls or numbers he has....rather it’s all about the plays in the game....even his “fixer” said as much that currently this is where it’s at in the filed now.

The voters tend to think they are on the sidelines of the field watching...the problem they get into is they end up the cheerleaders and forget to watch the plays being set up, let alone played...

This isn’t trying out for your local President of the Rotary Club folks.....there’s a reason why Cruz stated to Trump.... ‘The presidency should not be La Cosa Nostra’....people just aren’t paying attention where they should.....
