Rush almost HAS to support Cruz because Trump is more a Populist than a Conservative.
If Trump wins it means the electorate has turned its back on Goldwater-Reagan Conservatism. And if those days are done, Rush’s career is not far behind.

I see it a little different. As I posted months ago, I think that, if he wins, Trump takes over the role as “America’s Truth Teller,” and Rush’s role (and therefore listenership, and therefore profits) become greatly diminished.
Beg to differ. Reagan did not start out as the Conservative who backed Goldwater in 1964, and then moved California to the Right. He had patriotic/conservative instincts, which developed as he focused on his times.
Trump did not start out as the Conservative/patriot that he is in the process of evolving into. But he has the same innate Conservative instincts, now being focused, which brought Goldwater & Reagan to where they emerged as Conservative heroes.
Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.
And Trump clearly understands the social chaos that politically correct denial of American preferences has wrought & is increasingly manifesting.
“If Trump wins it means the electorate has turned its back on Goldwater-Reagan Conservatism.”
The Republican establishment hated and tried to destroy both Reagan and Goldwater.
I remember how strongly Reagan was hated. Only after Reagan won did the Republican establishment pretend to like Reagan.
If Trump pulls it off at the convention, Rush will be his very best friend on the radio the next day. He’ll be telling us all about how he plays golf with Trump, how he and Trump have discussed politics, etc. He’ll never again mention about how in-the-tank he was for Cruz.
For Rush, it’s about being one of the cool kids. He’s mostly hoping for another night in the Lincoln bedroom.
