Cruz is likely to block Trump on a second ballot at the GOP convention
Washington Post ^ | 04/13/2016 | Ed O' Keefe

Posted on 04/13/2016 5:09:25 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is close to ensuring that Donald Trump cannot win the GOP nomination on a second ballot at the party’s July convention in Cleveland, scooping up scores of delegates who have pledged to vote for him instead of the front-runner if given the chance.

The push by Cruz means that it is more essential than ever for Trump to clinch the nomination by winning a majority of delegates to avoid a contested and drawn-out convention fight, which Trump seems almost certain to lose.

The GOP race now rests on two cliffhangers: Can Trump lock up the nomination before Cleveland? And if not, can Cruz cobble together enough delegates to win a second convention vote if Trump fails in the first?

Trump’s path to amassing the 1,237 delegates he needs to win outright has only gotten narrower after losing to Cruz in Wisconsin and other recent contests, and would require him to perform better in the remaining states than he has to this point.

In addition, based on the delegate selections made by states and territories, Cruz is poised to pick up at least 130 more votes on a second ballot, according to a Washington Post analysis. That tally surpasses 170 delegates under less conservative assumptions — a number that could make it impossible for Trump to emerge victorious.

Problem is like in Colorado the ones selected to be Delegates were mostly the same ones who worked on the NeverTrump resolution from when a Rino was running. Cruz is nothing more then a NeverTrump tool to the State party officers et al.

“That will be a hollow victory after which Trump voters sit it out.”

They won’t sit out, they’ll be voting for Hillary after Trump endorses her.

“Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is close to ensuring that Donald Trump cannot win the GOP nomination on a second ballot”

This might be somewhat troubling if there was going to be a second ballot at the RNC convention but there won’t be. Donald Trump will handily win on the first ballot and he will be the GOP nominee.

Ted Cruz is about to hit the proverbially wall mathematically and then his campaign will be all over except the weeping. To distract everyone from the reality that Donald Trump is growing stronger in all the polls everyday the Cruz team is playing small ball sneaking around trying to put together some kind of sad Hail Mary to win on a second ballot that will never happen.

After April 26th Ted will not have to ask for whom the bell tolls it tolls for him.

though I’m hopeful Trump will pull this out and actually be able to implement things as President to help the USA, there is room to say Trump has fumbled a number of ways in recent months. I appreciate him showing how to keep costs down and such, but He does need his people to stay on top of the stuff other than having big rallies.

I truly hope you are wrong.

Obama’s sealed papers and now Cruz’s questionable eligibility ( no matter what lower courts have said about either) -

It concerns me that the requirements for those who would be or run for Presidency are being diluted. Cruz as VP would dilute further, since he may need to step up, or may run again.

Tired of our president’s having no loyalty to origins of our country and it’s constitution, laws etc.

I think Cruz needs to win 97% of the remaining pledged delegates to win on the first ballot.

Face it. Nobody - but Nobody - likes the guy.

You wish.

Nobody has made more connections and gotten more endorsements from local politicians across the country than Ted Cruz. And these local pols are who he is choosing to become his loyal delegates at the convention.

You state it as fact.

Can you document it?

Start with the resolution to block Trump from when a Rino was supposed to be the Nominee - then look at the published names, many have their office positions but do a little digging and you see prescient captains, big donors etc.

If Cruz had such an awesome ground game and delegate wrangling skills prior to the GOPe taking over his campaign under NeverTrump, why did he do so badly in the south?

What makes more sense? The GOP state machines are helping him under their NeverTrump agenda or he magically got better right after the Bush camp was invited in? Please note how smug the RNC is that they have control over who gets nominated at a contested convention. That’s not the behavior of a pro-Cruz delegate slate.

Insults bother you? How ironic.

I don’t know about Clinton/Carter negatives, but am extremely concerned about the Clinton war room digging up every last spec of dirt they can manage against Trump - a billionaire playboy with God knows what in his past. With the full support of the mediaPAC, Romney was hit for cutting a guys hair in high school and driving with his dog on the roof. Amazing.

Romney was a squeaky clean Mormon. I simply cannot fathom what they have on the thrice married “The Donald”.

This is no time to fall into the Tinfoil Hat Trap.

Though for the record...Ted’s all set.

Jedi.

I will say this again so we can all benefit from the rules because rules are rules. Bound delegates can’t vote until their man is nominated . They don’t count in calculating the majority. Rule 40b. Rules are rules.

Do you really believe he’s spending all that time, money and dealing with all this crap to cause chaos? If votes don’t count in the primary, why bother voting in the general? Whichever non Trump candidate gets in, it will be more of the same brought to you by the lobbiests who own them. What has having control of the house and senate gotten us? Total capitulation. I’ll take the risk on the outsider who can’t possibly be worse than the insiders

All what money? He’s getting tons of free press. A company owns “his” plane so who really knows where the money he is spending comes from.

Tons of negative press maybe. Cruz is placing third in the next four contests. That’s not winning. Kasich is beating him for Petes sake. Cruz lost the entire south and he’s running around acting like a winner. Trump is winning actual primaries where votes are actually counted.

I’m not bothered by Trump’s efforts.

There has never been a perfect campaign. You do what you can do, and hope things turn out good.

He has been winning almost all the primaries.

That works for me.

The GOPe isn’t going to let him win the caucuses. You should realize that.

Reagan was twice married. Guilty! Not buying the third time is the charm for the opposition.

Go to school on the trash that has been hurled at Trump so far. How has that affected him? He’s way out in the lead with 42% more delegates than Cruz headed into the New England states.

There are about 15-20 major scandals Hillary has been directly involved in. Trump will have her defending herself on each of them.

The guy is relentless, and he knows how to deliver the kill shot. (politically)

Ted already said he wouldn’t go there. Neither did Romney, McCain, Bush, or Dole. How did that work out?

Trump is not a GOPe go through the motions guy.

He’s in it to win it, and he’ll use every weapon in his arsenal.

I’m going to enjoy this. I’ve waited for 24 years to see the Clinton’s called out for being the low life dixie mafia people they have been.

Fair. But the media hasn’t turned on Mr. Trump yet. They’re using him for ratings now. Remember Juan “The Maverick”?

This will be a blood sport. Mr. Trump has a HUGH ego, thin skin, and an unknown past (David Brock says he has a library full of Trump dirt).

I hope I’m wrong. But doubt it.

David Brock came on the scene defending Bill Clinton.

As for the media turning on Trump? You’re right. They did it ten months ago.

Trump has been blasted over everything imaginable.

Just to put it in perspective, they were trying to say he lusted after incest with his daughter.

It’s Ted they have shied away from, and they did it because they hated Trump so much.

They may actually pull the whole story on his immigration background. If they do, they will make a very good case he is not a citizen.

I don’t worry about the press.
