What a sleazeball. It's the Colorado rules that are unhanded and manipulative, and intentionally designed to disenfranchise the voters and allow party insiders and activists to pick delegates loyal to a candidate of the insider's choice.
If a primary election in a state with the population of Colorado had a turnout of only 60,000 people, it would be considered a disaster.
The only votes that mattered were establishment insiders.
They require registered republican voters who care enough to attend and continue to support their candidate.

I would suggest a simple fix. Spend a Saturday night drafting up a new party, new icon, new theme, and new symbol...open up on Monday with the “Real-Republican Party” (RRP). Denounce the GOP as RINO and use mostly Twitter, Facebook and the internet to get the message out. Require a Alexander Hamilton bill ($10) to officially join and to serve as a yearly fee. Pick out five or six towns in Colorado to hold a yearly conference, and openly campaign against any candidate that the state GOP supports. Put up local enthusiasts against GOP nominees....up and down the state.
Why not take the next step and allow the Central Committee to determine who becomes the next president?

This mess is what simple attendees need to know. For the people who volunteer for the thankless job of being a precinct committeeman who will run a caucus, it's even worse. When I did it (about four years ago), I had to attend at least two training sessions ahead of time that covered all the paperwork and bureaucracy involved. Some questions were still not resolvable and the people on the Executive Board all gave me different answers because even they didn't understand the system.
Pretty amazing that only 60,000 registered republicans caucusing in state with a population of 5 million.

The caucuses are only the tip of the iceberg. Most people who are elected as delegates at the various levels are unknown to the people who are voting for them. To have any influence, you really need to attend not just your caucus, but also your county assembly, your state legislative district assemblies (which may be a county away), the federal congressional district assembly and the state assembly (the latter two may be on the other side of the state and involve some days on the road and staying in motels). In addition, since presidential convention delegates are notorious for lying about who they support, you really need to attend the national convention as well if you really want to know what you're getting.
Since only a very limited number of people are allowed to particpate at these higher levels (above the cauci) only an insignificant percentage of the public is even allowed to "show up" in a meaningful way.
It does seem like Trump should have been able to turn out more though.

i’m not complaining about trump, i’m complaining about colorado’s GOPe voter disenfranchise system, a system designed not only to shut out existing party members, but anyone else foolish enough to consider joining the party.
