Some residents of North Carolina don't like the idea of sharing restrooms with transgender men and women, and they were pleased to learn that, thanks to a new law, they won't have to. I have news for them: They already have. They just didn't know it. And they will again.
In February, the Charlotte City Council approved an ordinance strengthening protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identification. It included a provision stipulating that transgender men may use men's restrooms and transgender women may use women's restrooms.
That provision brought on a hailstorm of fury and disbelief, and the North Carolina Legislature quickly passed a bill to overrule it. The Charlotte ordinance "defies common sense and basic community norms," said Gov. Pat McCrory on signing the state law.
"We've had these proper etiquette situations for decades in our country," he argued, "and all of a sudden, through political correctness, we're throwing away basic etiquette." Under the new policy, North Carolinians will have to use the restroom corresponding to the sex denoted on their birth certificates.
"No Men in Women's Bathrooms," read one of the signs brandished by opponents of the Charlotte measure. That sounds like a good reason to reject it -- if you don't think very hard.
Under the new state law, a woman who undergoes sex change surgery, takes hormones and has a penis, a deep voice and facial hair will be required to use the women's restroom. In the name of protecting daughters from unwanted male intruders, the Legislature and governor are exposing them to exactly that. Men, meanwhile, will have to share facilities with people wearing skirts and lipstick.
This policy will cause far more discomfort than it will prevent. What McCrory and others forget is that transgender men generally go unnoticed in men's restrooms, for the simple reason that they appear to be men. In fact, the odds are very good that at one time or another, you have unwittingly done your business alongside someone who is transgender -- with no ill effects.
Even in North Carolina, that will keep happening. If someone with breasts and long hair enters a women's restroom, strangers usually won't realize this person was born with a full set of testicles. If a muscular, bearded person in a suit strides up to a urinal, the guys at the others aren't going to ask for proof he is a male. In these cases, ignorance is bliss.
What will generate problems is transgender people's obeying the North Carolina law. But that may not happen often. It's not as though anyone has a clue how to enforce this mandate. Without a cop stationed at every entrance demanding birth certificates, most transgender people will probably go on doing as they've done, invisibly, in the past.
The oft-stated fear is that male child molesters will dress up as women to find girls to victimize. But what's stopping them from doing that now?
And where is the epidemic of abuse where transgender people are allowed to choose restrooms? The liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America contacted law enforcement officials and other experts in 12 states and found none who was aware of any such incidents.
McCrory thinks all we need to do is uphold "basic community norms." But the traditional norm for people with gender dysphoria has been to deny, suppress or hide their true nature -- so that everyone else could operate in comfortable denial.
The traditional norm these people could expect if they were found out has been hostile and often violent. This week, a Brooklyn man pleaded guilty to manslaughter for killing a 21-year-old transgender woman. He had been flirting with her, and when he found out she was not exactly what he assumed, he flew into a rage and beat her to death.
Barring transgender people from the restrooms they prefer exposes them to harm by exposing something they may want to be secret: that they are transgender. In addition, a lawsuit filed against the North Carolina law noted, "if a transgender woman were to use the men's restroom, she likely would be harassed and might be assaulted by men who believed that she should not be in the men's restroom." Transgender men emerging from women's restrooms may incur violence from angry fathers or husbands.
The North Carolina law makes perfect sense if you're willing to pretend that transgender people don't exist. Too bad they won't cooperate.
If I am in a bathroom and some pervert comes in there with me it will end very poorly and very loudly for him.
Well, it’s by Steve Chapman, so what can I say?
Is Townhall conservative??? It’s quoting Media Matters which is run by a gay guy.
Look, I live in NYC and transsexuals are often INSANE. They are drug abusers and often high when they get on buses and subways. I do not like them. I’m talking fake women, not fake men, if you can follow this insanity. I do not want these fake women in the bathroom with me or any other woman.
Also, why these laws anyway? There are about 40 fake women and men in the USA alone. And they’re generally concentrated in one or two cities throughout the US.
What is NOT discussed is the mental instability of these “transgenders” who “feel” they are opposite of their chromosomal makeup. And this, dear FRiends is usually caused by their.... environment, and.... the influence of hostile abusive parents and/or sexual perverts who seduce them. Our P—resident happens to be one— from Frank Marshall Davis, the queer porno writing Marxist from Hawaii. Result: a twisted psychological basket case that creates a political effort to insist to the vast majority of regular (and not so regular, perved outs) people.... that this is a LARGE number of “other-normal” people. It isn’t. Even under the prior laws— perverts still seduce adults and children in public access bathrooms. And, the pedophiles cannot be cured, frankly should be removed from society.
LOLA—
“Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It’s a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
Except for Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.
Well I left home just a week before,
And I’ve never ever kissed a woman before,
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
And said, “Little boy, gonna make you a man.”
Well I’m not the world’s most masculine man,
But I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man,
And so is Lola.
Lo lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.”
I am not familiar with the man, and after seeing what passes for his intellect, i'm pretty sure I don't want to become familiar with him.
The article presumes DNA changes from male to female. Humans are not clown fish.
A fine post. Thank you for sharing it and I am most serious as I say that.

CLOWNHALL HAS GONE COMPLETELY WHACKO LIBERAL
And, don’t leave out the “Squatty Potty” signs-— have you heard the national radio ads for this Glenn Beck sponsor? Absolutely disgusting-— pushing the boundaries. But then the regular station is touting a “men’s health clinic” that guarantees treatment to work... in the office... for less than viagra and all natural. Obnoxious insipid ads. Be better if they used a Motown sound track to at least put some zing behind the claim... something like “Let’s Get it On”
Or if he....uh, sits... to piss. Like our obamaumao mistake of a human.
just go through the list and keep clicking next at each page
I heard they even have a couch. Hmm... ya think that's true??
That is absolutely correct. Self identify is the language in the charlotte ordinance.... NOT the precondition of having undergone gender transformation surgery and treatment. ANY GD perv could “self ID” that day as one thing... and assault someone, and change ID the next and do that. Opens the Pandora’s box to true perverts, and offenders.
It was “outed” that the main leader behind this ordinance being passed...was himself a convicted pedophile, who served time and is in the national sex offender registry. This is what electrified the state legislature into action to override with a definitive law of “non-discrimination” that is quite clear— not mandating acceptance but allowing a business to make (or not) that decision. This is a point totally ignored by the whacko Left.
What motivated the Charlotte legislation? Was a transgendered person treated badly in a restroom?
I agree with the author that transgendered people have been going into the ‘wrong’ restroom all along without causing newsmaking problems. They have been doing it discreetly, and that’s worked.
Why discriminate against 99.9 percent of our population by having an explicit law that allows their restrooms to be invaded by people that make them uncomfortable or worse.
So you'd be cool watching this individual follow your wife or daughter into the women's restroom?
What about this person?
Because if they're using the women's restroom, that's because they're women.
There’s no catch-all policy for this.
Some people with M or F on their birth certificate naturally look like the opposite sex. Even without hormones or surgery.
So by enforcing a law based on birth certificates, you’ll still have people that look like they’re in the “wrong” bathroom through no fault of their own (unless you start enforcing laws saying birth females must shave, wear makeup, dresses etc)
I don’t think government should enforce who goes in bathrooms and the signs should be just a suggestion. IF a crime actually occurs, then the perp should be prosecuted for that crime and that is 100% irrespective of their sex.
IMO, this is just another pointless emotional distraction to waste people’s time while the elites laugh and steal half our paychecks
Not Townhall, just Steve Chapman who is a columnist and editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune
Then there is this: “Duke opens first transgender center in NC”.... what they don’t say in the headline is that it is A PEDIATRIC transgender center.... which says it “includes gender affirming” treatment (what the HELL does that mean— if a little boy thinks he might be a girl, to help him be a man....Noooooo... it’s to help him be “changed”).
It is very important FReepers to not let the threat of this take one over... but to stick to the absolute disaster this creates in ENTERTAINING the psychological dysfunction of mentally ill people, whose high suicide rate either before or after “change” is high because they are mentally ill.
