Here's Why Cruz and Trump are BOTH Likely to Fall Short of 1237 Delegates
Conservative Review ^ | 04/04/2016 | Robert Eno

Posted on 04/05/2016 6:59:31 PM PDT by writer33

On Saturday, over at The Gateway Pundit, Joe Hoft put together a delegate math piece purporting to show that Cruz will be out of the running for 1237 delegates by the end of April. Hoft got that right, but his math used to get there is significantly off. What Hoft also fails to mention is that Trump will be effectively unable to reach 1237 delegates at the end of May.

Using Hoft’s report, the Trump campaign began to echo the elimination narrative. It also realized Trump’s own path to 1237 has significantly narrowed. When Trump fails to get to 1237, Cruz has already proven he has a superior second ballot strategy.

Read the entire piece. It breaks it down state by state by state and how this ends with both not reaching the Holy Grail total of 1237.

You are full of yourself! Your man has been more vitriolic and nasty, as has been Cruz supporters. And you sit there and judge Trumpsters? Pot-Kettle get it?

I think you’re on to something. A thread last night tried to say it was immoral to continue if you can’t get 1237. So they are both immoral for not quitting.

GOPe already threw our votes away! Are you so blind that you can not see?

If Jeb was in Trumps position, the GOPe would have reined in Kasuck and Cruz. Go ahead, say this is not true!

This election is about allegiance to the United States! Make no mistake.

I understand that....

Cruz and Kasich cannot get to 1237 so he and Kasich stays in the race to deny Trump delegates.

Trump is the only one who can get to 1237 at this point. So, who is the obstructionists?

If there's an open/contested/brokered convention and neither Trump nor Cruz receives the nomination, nobody should vote for the Republican nominee. The delegates, or the party bosses, may pick the nominee, but the voters choose whether to vote for that nominee.

Trump and Cruz together will have the vast majority of delegates by the time of the convention. That means the Republicans voters decided that either Trump or Cruz should be the nominee. To reject that decision is to insult the voters. Referring to the rules or the rules-to-be misses the point. For the Republican Party to reject the voters' choice is to risk receiving the wrath of the voters.

I hope the GOPe steps back from the brink and decides not to run its party like a third-world dictatorship. Unfortunately, it is too arrogant and so Trump and Cruz will have to stop the GOPe. If they fail, then the People should punishment the party with the goal of destroying it.

Bravo. Nailed it. If it wasn’t for Trump, FR would be ecstatic because a conservative constitutionalist is going to win. I feel like I am in bizarro world.

“He may get the nomination, but he will not win the general. I will not hold my nose and vote for any brokered candidate.”

Who are you talking about? If neither Trump nor Cruz get to 1237 by the convention, then the eventual nominee WILL be a brokered candidate. And there is a good chance neither Trump nor Cruz will get to 1237 by the convention.

It has to be either Trump or Cruz after this process. If the GOP tries to steer the nomination to a non-participant in the long, intense primary voting season, it will invalidate the nomination in the minds of at least half the potential Republican voters. Maybe three quarters.

So that can only lead to two plausible outcomes, a Democrat landslide win, or a three-way race that would be rather difficult to predict but no doubt would favor the Democrats too. Hard to see how a Romney-Ryan sort of candidate could win any states except possibly Utah or Wisconsin. And that development would (I am sure) launch a Trump third-party run but that also cannot win many states.

In the unlikely event that Cruz seems to be the guy pushed out, I don’t see him running third-party, I see him just withdrawing into a Texas shell for a year or two and considering his options.

In the also unlikely scenario of the party elites turning to Cruz after several ballots and pushing him past Trump, that would just be an epic fail. I like Ted Cruz more than many but I think the only way he can become president is to catch fire and win almost all the remaining delegates and hit Cleveland with more than Trump if not more than 1237. That is a huge task and my political instincts tell me it cannot happen unless Trump absolutely self-destructs on the campaign trail.

The solution, then, for the nation (radical concept, two powerful men having that moment of understanding that the nation is more important than either of them) is for Trump and Cruz to mount a joint campaign. It does not require Trump to accept Cruz as v-p, maybe he’s better suited to some other role. I see nothing wrong with Chris Christie as the v-p and it seemed like Trump was signalling that. Of course there’s also Sarah Palin. It could work out very well.

But whatever happens, everyone concerned has a responsibility now — to do whatever it takes to keep the Democrats from winning again. Even a Ryan or Romney presidency would be preferable — it’s not that they are that good, it’s that Sanders or Clinton are that bad.

Well, for one thing, if Yeb! was in Trump’s position, Kasich would have dropped out long ago on his own.

Cruz is being used to block Trump.

As soon as he’s no longer needed he’ll be cast aside by the GOPe. They’ll then move to steal the nomination at the convention.

Yep - and he's a willing cat's paw because his own ego is desperately grasping for the nomination.

Cruz is the one who needs the gag. I can’t imagine listening to him for 8 years. He sounds like a combination of Elmer Gantry and Mr. Haney from Green Acres. It’s a moot point, really, because he’d never get past Hitlery. People just don’t like him, and I can see why.
