Free Republic DNS entry seems to be gone

I was surfing FR this afternoon and suddenly was unable to access any page on FR and the error stated the server could not be found.

I located the IP address, 209.157.64.200, of the server and then added an entry into my PC's host file and I can now see FR again.

I still do not see a DNS entry for FR, and that is interesting.

I know what I did to avoid such problems and further to negate DDOS attacks was to switch to a DNS provider that has huge footprint so that the TTL is very for refresh. Not sure if it a great plan. But being able to have domain resolve to new IP addresses in about 1 minute. Which is pretty fast.

Totally agree. Unless you're one of the big boys with your own data centers, or have some very special needs, there's no reason to host your own DNS server and plenty of reasons not to. It does not need to be handled by the same provider hosting your web site/web app.

BTW - can you share what DNS provider you are using?

Please ignore my other reply to you, there can’t be two files with the same name in the same folder. Wasn’t thinking, duh.

You need to set your file browser to display filename extensions, and you will see that only one of those host files has no extension, and that’s the one that the computer uses.

Here’s is MayflowerMadam’s specific info in case it can help identify the problem.

The message I get: “This page can’t be displayed.”

At home, Comcast is our internet provider. I can’t log in to FR using either the Wi-Fi, or the PC that’s hard-wired to the service.

In the car this morning I was able to access FR via cellular using the Verizon 4GLTE connection.

In the car a couple hours later I got the “page can’t be displayed” message again – again via Verizon 4GLTE connection.

Fix DNS Problems

Can we get the IP (209.157.64.200) number out to the FR Facebook page and Twitter? I am noticing a very significant drop off of traffic to FR.

I had to reprogram my wife's browser earlier. If people cannot get to the front page, they will not be able to read how to do the fix.

Just have them paste the number in either the search or address bar to get here.

my FR was out for a DNS issue on verizon wireless all afternoon - it just returned several mintues ago. I am just responding to you because you had mentioned verizon.
