After the dust settled on the Tesla Model 3 jamboree, preorder deposits approached $300 million, topping up Elon Musk's capex war-chest. His new electric car's reviews are insanely great, but some commentators are wondering if it's really an elaborate Ponzi scheme.

By nightfall on Saturday, that order tally had jumped. ... Thats more than $US280 million in zero-cost capital. [It's] the fastest growing customer order book in the history of the automobile.
There could have been no greater demonstration of the latent demand for electric vehicles than [this]. The days of the internal combustion engine are numbered.
VW...and other car makers [plan] to throw all their efforts into electric vehicles. ... China and other countries are trying to kick petrol and diesel cars off the road. ... Indias roads minister...was quoted as [wanting] all cars to be electric by 2030. Norway...by 2025, and the Netherlands...will ban sales of new petrol cars from that date. ... Saudi Arabia said it is planning to establish a $US2 trillion sovereign wealth fund...in preparation for a world beyond oil.
Tesla has also managed to up-end the whole concept of networks and dealerships. ... And this is where it gets interesting.
And no thought at all to where the electricity to recharge the batteries will come from.
Of course it is a ponzi scheme. Elon MusK is a leftist therefore incapable of running an an honest business
How well do they hold up? Automobile’s are complex machines subject to intense vibration. Apparently Consumer Reports changed their opinion after living with one for while. The battery has a finite lifetime resulting in serious devaluation of the vehicle after 3 years.
Oh, they’ve thought about the power source — They’ll be burning carbon-free unicorn farts. Very environmentally friendly, don’t you know.
never mind how his business is financed. The car is technically and visually very impressive
It will come from people like YOU, who form the company to place coin operated charging stations every one hundred yard across the United States.
With electric cars able to go 50 miles between charges, your fortune will be beyond avarice.
Second generation charging stations will be able to accpet CREDIT CARDS, another step in convenience for the auto owner.
In a further advance in technology, each charging station wil gets its power from a 300 foot tall windmill generator. Thus the nation will not have to have a vast spider-web of overhead wires.
Since you will own the windmill plant you will be pretty well off financially.
” Consumer Reports “
In its annual reliability survey of 1.1 million vehicles, Consumer Reports stated that it expects reliability of new models to be 60% above average for the Nissan LEAF and that the Tesla Model S fared well, despite problems with squeaks, rattles, body hardware and door handles that dont always pop out. The Model S scored well in the areas that matter most, including drive system, electrical system, suspension, brakes, paint and so on.
The only question I have is when to go full body SHORT.
Timing is everything
Just run the cars on cold fusion.
“The battery has a finite lifetime resulting in serious devaluation of the vehicle after 3 years.”
Tesla guarantees the drive-train including batteries for eight years, unlimited mileage.
Real life usage shows that the battery will be between 70 and 80% of capacity after ten years.
“And no thought at all to where the electricity to recharge the batteries will come from.”
Before 10AM and after 7PM we have LOTS of excess capacity.
Solar is the future. Not to save us from the mythological global warming, but to become personally energy independent.
Costs to go solar will continue to drop. Tesla’s giga-factory will bring economies of scale to the energy storage side of the equation. (Solar only generates electricity when the sun shines, so storage is required.)
For anyone interested in living off the grid and becoming less reliant on the government to protect us from a disruption to energy and food supplies, the technological advances Tesla is making is very helpful.
after 10 years we could probably replace the battery pack and be back to 100% capacity again
Real life usage shows that the battery will be between 70 and 80% of capacity after ten years.Your wireless mouse doesn't even perform at 70% of capacity.
I used to doubt solar, but after researching solar city’s offering I’m convinced solar is the future
Doesn’t solar fry a lot of birds?
the analysts think the stock is overpriced. by the numbers it is over priced. However, Tesla is promising nothing less than a revolution. And so far they are on track to deliver. This is something so awesome that it will do for the next 8 years for whoever is the next president — what fracking did for Obama.
Fracking basically printed real dollars to back up the feds fake dollars.
If damaged these batteries can short circuit causing thermal runaway and a lithium fire, which is among the most difficult fires to suppress. A defect could also cause this.
With the general hatred of faith today, it amazes me what people are willing (and eager) to believe in (and pay for), whether they like it or not in fact since these cars are subsidized.
