Israel's Chief Rabbi: Non-Jews should not be allowed to live in Israel

Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef has faced a public backlash after saying that according to Jewish law some non-Jews should be forbidden to live in Israel.

“According to Jewish law, it’s forbidden for a non-Jew to live in the Land of Israel – unless he has accepted the seven Noahide laws,” Rabbi Yosef said during his weekly Saturday lecture on March 26.

Non-Jews who fail to live by the seven Noahide laws should be expelled to Saudi Arabia, he added.

“If he’s not willing to accept one of them, [which is] not to commit suicide, if he’s not willing to accept this, you send him to Saudi Arabia,” Yosef said.

The seven Laws of Noah include prohibitions against idolatry, blaspheming God, murder, illicit sexual relations, stealing and eating a limb of a live animal. It also prescribes the establishment of a legal system that would ensure obedience to the law.

If a non-Jew stays in Israel, he has to serve the Jews, the Rabbi said.

“Who will be the servers? Who will be our assistants? Therefore, we leave them here in the land,” he said.

However, following a wave public outrage, Yosef had to backtrack on his comments. He explained that his words had nothing to do with today’s world as he had been referring to the “days of the messiah.”

“These laws are theoretical, [and] refer to fulfilling the seven Noahide Laws in the days of the messiah, and have no connection to the present day,” he wrote, adding that he has “always adopted a peaceful and embracing path.”

“It’s clear that there’s no law in our time, God forbid, to expel non-Jews from Israel,” he concluded.

This is not the first time Chief Rabbi Yosef has found himself in hot water over his comments. Earlier this month he said that Israelis should not be afraid to kill terrorists armed with knives.

No offense Rabbi, but you sound like the mohammedans and their law that non-muslims are not allowed to visit, let alone live in Mecca. IF your concern is a security issue only, I can understand it, but not being a biblical scholar, does it say anywhere in the old testament that Israel is only for the Jewish people? If so, so be it, but you’ll have a fight on your hands.

The headline is misleading. The headline tells me that "Israel's chief rabbi" namely the Pope of the Israeli based jews said that "non-jews should not live in Israel" - non-jews with no exception.

Yet the article says "Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef has faced a public backlash after saying that according to Jewish law some non-Jews should be forbidden to live in Israel. unless he has accepted the seven Noahide laws," -- this guy is not the Chief Rabbi of all Jews in Israel

And he gives a clear statement that if you follow the 7 noahcide laws you can stay as per his statement

1. Do not deny God.
2. Do not blaspheme God.
3. Do not murder.
4. Do not engage in illicit sexual relations.
5. Do not steal.
6. Do not eat of a live animal.
7. Establish courts/legal system to ensure obedience to the law.

Most religious people would naturally follow these laws -- even Hindus and Buddhists. Athiests don't.

Israel is a secular state and the Rabbinate has no control over non religious issues, any more than the head Muslim and Christian officials in Israel have.

Leaving that asice, he makes clear his comment refers to the seven Noahide Laws in the days of the Messiah, not today unless the Messiah returns.

Good grief, he's talking about what happens when the Messiah returns. You're right, at that time Jews don't fare well under Islam, they're all killed. Christian theology only kills most of them.

Olam Ha-Ba: The Messianic Age

I can see that they don’t follow rules 1&2 but they do follow the other rules.

What’s wrong with that? What if we stated that to live in the United States that rule #1 was “Do not deny political promises” and rule #2 was “Do not blaspheme the press”?
