Rush Limbaugh’s blessing of Trump is killing conservatism
Washington Post ^ | 3/28/2016 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 03/28/2016 10:24:42 PM PDT by GilGil

If Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee, one of the main reasons will be that many in the conservative movement found him acceptable. And one of the main reasons that many conservatives are finding Trump acceptable is that the most influential political talk radio host in history, Rush Limbaugh, has provided his blessing.

Not his endorsement. Limbaugh takes pains to preserve neutrality between Trump and Ted Cruz, whom he describes as the obvious choice “if conservatism is the dominating factor in how you vote.”

But Limbaugh has also consistently defended Trump as a legitimate choice for those whose dominating factor is the humiliation of “the establishment.”

Rush very seldom does interviews and, as I’ve noted above, he says Trump is a friend. I’m sure he knows people would accuse him of favoritism if he gave Trump an interview at this stage in the campaign.

>>>Gerson does not seem to understand that first you have to win then you can preach conservatism.

You think you can sneak in freedom, liberty, the constitution and rule of law?

The problem is not the message, but the messenger. And, with Trump, you have both the wrong message and the wrong messenger.

If you win, you will have won nothing. Trump and Hillary will debate who can be the best tyrant and who can ‘manage’ big government best.

"No conservative supports Trump."

This is 100% true.

“The Republicans were given a mandate in 2014 to stop Zero.”

Too bad they weren’t given a veto proof Senate.

Who was "Dealy?"

Give me a break.

Congress controls the purse strings. They could have defunded Obama’s light bill at the White House.

They could have cut off federal gray train payments to Obama’s supporters until Obama caved.

The GOPe supports the status quo. Look in Mississippi where GOP RNC funds went to get Democrat voters to turn out to vote against the ‘racist’ Tea Party candidate.

They are ALL against the American people and need to be tossed out.

The Republicans are worse because they profess to want to stop the problems until they get elected and become part of it.

Trump is the political atom bomb. He’s the CONTROL-ALT-DELETE move to restart the system.

This is nonsense.

Gerson wouldn’t recognize conservatism if it bit him in the ass.

He’s cut out of the same cloth as David Brooks - both are eunuchs.

Rush has been very measured when it comes to Trump. Fawning full praise? No. But he has not been as critical of Trump as he was of McCain throughout 00 and 08 and the same with Romney in 12. Oddly, in 08 he seemed more in the corner of Romney and gave Romney more support in 08 than he did when 12. And he’s been quicker to circle the wagons regarding Trump and where Trump has exposure Rush generally has been quick to provide Trump cover. I do think he’s been much less critical toward Cruz and if you read between the lines Cruz is here his heart is. But he’s treated Trump more than fair, and especially early in the process.

Actually Rush’s ratings as I’ve seen them have been growing during the election season as they always do.

The Washington DC area prospers while the rest of the country lags behind.

That part of the country needs a dramatically higher unemployment rate.

Business as usual GOPe politicians speak of a balanced budget ten years down the road.

That’s a joke. 18 trillion plus in national debt is enough......

We need a balanced budget in ten months when the new president takes office.

And what if they were. It wouldn’t make a difference because the GOP and Dems all do what the elite money tells them to do.

Open borders, no religious freedom for gay marriage objectors, no reversal of Obamacare, only amending etc. etc. etc.

Not his endorsement. Limbaugh takes pains to preserve neutrality between Trump and Ted Cruz, whom he describes as the obvious choice "if conservatism is the dominating factor in how you vote."

Patently false. Limbaugh is totally in the Cruz camp. He's just hedging a little in case the GOPe takedown of Trump isn't successful, which looks to be the case.

But Limbaugh has also consistently defended Trump as a legitimate choice for those whose dominating factor is the humiliation of "the establishment."

That's because Donald Trump is a legitimate choice to take down the DC Establishment.

Humiliation has nothing to do with it: the DC Establishment of both parties needs to be absolutely obliterated.

Nothing could be more important for the American People of all political persuasions than for the DC status quo to be shaken to its core. Nothing.

Being that Rush is from here in Missouri, when all the Cruz ads were running here before we voted on March 15, they had Rush audio in them talking up Cruz. Very effective for this area. I don’t recall hearing Rush in any Trump ads. In fact, I didn’t hear ANY Trump ads and he still won here.

I’m a conservatism, but after 16 years of GWB and the GOP congress stabbing me in the back, I don’t want to associated with “Conservatives” like Glenn Beck, Mitt Romney, Ryan, Rubio, and even Ted Cruz. All I want is to stop my nation from being over run by 3ed worlds and the end to a government and media that hates me for having been born white.

Rush is grasping for relevance. He lost faith in the U.S. a few years ago.

He was out front with his hope that Obama would fail. Unfortunately, Obama succeeded -- in driving the U.S. into a ditch.
