ed Cruz may be gaining on Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in the largest remaining state in the Republican primary.
A new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll of likely Republican voters published on Sunday showed the Texas senator, with 35% support, just 1 point behind Trump's 36% in California.
California is the largest and most delegate-heavy state remaining in the Republican nominating contest. In the poll, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, the third GOP candidate, logged a distant third with 14% support.
Other recent polls have mostly shown Trump with a large lead over Cruz and Kasich, and with the primary still over two months away, the polls could easily shift before election day.
Still, even if Trump wins the primary outright, Cruz's strength in California could still pose a problem for the real-estate magnate.
The Times/USC poll is one of the first released since Sen. Marco Rubio dropped out of the race, and could hint that Cruz has a shot at taking a large chunk of the delegates home in California. Thirteen delegates are awarded to the state-wide winner, while the remaining sum are awarded by whichever candidate wins each district.
The Sunday poll also found Cruz's strength concentrated in Los Angeles County and the Central Valley, one of the more rural parts of the state. Some observers further speculated that Kasich could play well in Democratic-heavy coastal areas. Taken together, Cruz and Kasich's support in California could hinder Trump's goal of securing the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination on the first round of voting.
California's primary is on June 7.

Who said that?
I did say Cruz would CRUSH Trump in Iowa though, despite the last THIRTEEN polls all saying Trump would win Iowa.
Right now, I am saying Cruz will CRUSH Trump in Wisconsin(which is next to vote) and it won’t even be close.
California poll: Trump ahead in GOP primary

... a new statewide poll of Republicans.
Trump leads with 37 percent among registered Republicans in California, according to a USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll released Sunday. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz follows with 30 percent, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich trails with 12 percent.
Totally agree and California is looking good also.
Ted is the candidate who’s wanTed.
And who will win.
Why stick with a loser who will lose to Hillary?
And, by the way, where is your friend, Donald?
Still curled up in his bed in New York City where he HAS to sleep every night, he’s so totally neurotic.
Why are you trumpers so scared?
Trumps numbers are stagnent or sinking while Ted’s are climbing.
People know who the Real Sleaze is.
actually, Trump didn’t ‘release’ a picture of anyone. It was a retweet that had already made the rounds. Did it make Heidi look ugly? I thought it was a comparison between an emotionally driven woman and a serene, soft-spoken woman.
again, Heidi Cruz is, of her own right, a public figure. Criticism of her political career, which are public record, juxtaposed against the professed platform of her husband, is fair game. Especially when she injects herself into the campaign by making personal comments about Trump.
Again, that ad had absolutely NOTHING to do with Ted Cruz. Liz Mair who runs the outfit that released the ad used to work for Scott Walker. Again her PAC I'd NOT a Ted Cruz PAC etc etc.
And you were wrong there too Smokin' Joe. It ended up being a three-way tie between Cruz, Trump and Rubio. All of them came away with just 7 delegates. Oh wait, Cruz did get 8 delegates by virtue of being slightly ahead. So okay, Cruz won by one delegate. He's currently trailing Trump by 275 delegates. Maybe that one delegate will make a difference but Cruz has a lot of catching up to do for that one delegate victory in Iowa to matter.
Not exactly what I would call a "crushing" of Trump. Now what happened last night in WA, AK and HI between Bernie and Shrillary. Now that was a crushing.
Notice the lawyer double-speak ... Trump said no such thing ... but by cleverly prefacing with the word 'effectively' ... he can put out a bald-faced lie and his supporters will eat it up.
I think Ted should sue NE and take over the operation of the tabloid ... he is the perfect person for the job.
You are the only one here in touch with reality. CA is 55 distinct winner take all primaries. In 54 primaries there are only 3 delegates to be taken.
The odds are that Kasich will win 1 or 2 primaries and 3 or 6 delegates. Cruz and Trump will each win a significant number (if election were this week). Nobody can predict which will win more.
Let me know the current March 2016 ground game in each district and that will determine the Cruz turnout. Cruz averages thousands of donors per district. If they are out knocking on their neighbors doors in March and April and May and June then Cruz wins.
you are making an assumption.
I do not assume Mair did or did not have anything to do with Cruz. Other than her endorsing him, which is public record. What was it that was said about the Cruz sex scandal, ‘if you’re worried about legal, have an intern post it and then ‘discover’ it? Was the same game played with the ad? I don’t know if that happened here or not. I’ll wait until GQ confirms yes or no. It will come out.
you should also be aware that Mair worked for Scott Walker for ONE DAY. Iowa chairman Jeff Kaufmann called her comments “not only incorrect, theyre rather juvenile, theyre naive, theyre ignorant.
oh, and by the way? Mair isn’t a conservative; she’s a moderate (although her Alynski tactics and helmet hair brand her as a dem)

imporTED :-)
I was right actually. Ted Cruz won Iowa and Rubio nearly over took Trump. And all the last THIRTEEN polls had Trump winning, with the CNN poll which had Trump winning by a massive 13% being retweeted by Trump and being prominently displays in the sidebar here at FR. Who ended up winning? Ted Cruz.
In Iowa poll threads, Trump bots loudly boasted about how Trump was going to CRUSH Ted Cruz, citing the CNN poll.
Untill Trump bots provide the evidence to prove otherwise, Mair's ad had absolutely NOTHING to do with Ted Cruz. She said so herself on Twitter.
LA Times, NY Times. It’s all the same birdcage liner... My parakeet, Phoebe, says that all is good for pooping on.
Now there's a waste of time, imagining that scenario!
