Lasting Damage for G.O.P.? Young Voters Reject Donald Trump (52% Clinton - 19% Trump)
New York Times ^ | March 24, 2016 | Toni Monkovic

Posted on 03/24/2016 7:20:35 PM PDT by reaganaut1

To understand the concern, and in some cases the panic, of many Republican officials over Donald Trump, consider this fact: Young people generally don’t like him. The potential of losing an election is one thing, but as polling numbers suggest, the Trump brand could weigh on the G.O.P. for a generation.

■ In a recent USA Today/Rock the Vote poll, respondents under 35 said they would pick Hillary Clinton over Mr. Trump, 52-19. Those lopsided numbers would be hard to reverse if Mr. Trump were the nominee because he is such a known quantity. When the respondents were limited to whites only, her lead was still substantial, 45-26.

■ A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll showed Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton essentially tied among people 40 and older, but with those under 40 preferring her by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.

■ In a national survey led by the Republican pollster Frank Luntz, 1,000 people 18 to 26 were asked: “Out of today’s major political figures, who do you like and respect the most?”

Thirty-one percent chose Bernie Sanders, followed by 18 percent for Barack Obama and 11 percent for Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Trump scored highest among Republicans, at 9 percent. In USA Today, Mr. Luntz called it a “a chasm of disconnection that renders every prominent national Republican irrelevant with the voting bloc that could control campaigns for the next 30 years.”

Your celebrating like they would turn to your guy.

So in reality your cheering our defeat. Makes sense.

It’s been a non stop onslaught for what, the past couple weeks at least?

Cruz would be in a corner crying like a baby if trump weren’t in this race

absorbing all this punishment.

It is the NYSlimes. They have a history of lies. I see no reason to consider this other than propaganda.

They have been against Trump from the beginning. This shows us who they fear, and they fear Trump.

“Well I guess if that’s true, then Cruz is less popular than Trump based on the number of people who will come out to one of his rallies.”

I should have clarified that I do believe Cruz would lose in November as well. I think Cruz would just do better than Trump because he isn’t so badly hated the way Trump is with women, minorities and under 40 voters. I think Cruz would win all the states Romney won and possibly bring VA and CO and maybe FL back into the GOP column as more conservatives will turn out to vote than they did in 2012. But he still needs OH which won’t happen. The large black populations in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati will deliver OH for Hillary.

But Trump is so widely hated across the board, it’s hard to see him outdoing Romney or McCain

I know we all value the New York Times’ heartfelt “concern” about Republican issues. /s

Nate Silver is delusional. FLORIDA? No. Just look at the numbers. GOP turnout was about 2.3 million, Dems was 1.7. That's MORE THAN HALF A MILLION more votes. Additionally, Trump only got 20,000 less votes than Hillary and there were like 12 names on the GOP ballot.

And Ohio? Hillary Clinton won over Sanders by 14%.

Donald Trump didn't even win and he still got more votes than Hillary in Ohio.

Nate must be using his fat GOPe paychecks to buy limitless supplies of crack cocaine.

Most of the “younger people” in these polls are illegals or foreign visitors.

I can’t really imagine any GOP candidate doing substantially well w/ younger voters at this point. Whoever comes out of the convention is likely be irreparably damaged.

Trump’s Art of the Deal.

Ask for what you don’t want and settle for what you do want.

If he’s asking to be president he doesn’t want to be president he wants Hillary to be president.

Nobody but a complete idiot would do the type of scorched earth campaign he’s done if he actually intended to win the presidency and not just the nomination.

“Teb is getting money from Soros as well. Big bundles of cash as they try and take down Trump.”

Well, how about that for a revelation. Now here’s your chance to provide evidence for that wild-eyed accusation. Include links (and not some basement-dwelling “captain underpants” blogger, either).

It’s those numerous people on the GOP ballot that are bringing in the high turnout. Cruz is getting record turnout in the states he’s winning too.

Less Dem candidates and a less competitive primary are attracting less voters to their primary. But Hillary still is bringing in more voters for her than Trump or any Republican got.

The primary turnout doesn’t predict general election turnout. Especially since the Dems are trying to suppress primary turnout so Hillary can walk in, by putting debates on Saturdays and stuff. They won’t be suppressing turnout in the general.

Totally agree. He has a 35-40% ceiling in the GOP primary pool, but in a national general election he will still have a 35% ceiling. We are looking at Johnson-Goldwater here and a probable loss of both the House and Senate. Sadly I think that’s what many on here want. They hate the Republican party so much they don’t care if the Dems win as long as the GOP loses. The only chance Hillary had was a fractured Republican party and the Donald is delivering that to her. So just what did Bill and Donald talk about in the two hour phone call?

False. Voter suppression is how the kenyan won the last time. They smeared Romney with 47% slime and middle/working class whites stayed home. They’ll do the same to stereotypical conservative career politician Cruz. Cruz you lose. Guaranteed.

Trump has a chance. Teddy has none. Kasich has none. Willard has none. Jeb? has none. Ryan has none.

But even better, if the gop decides to pull some shenanigans, the down ballot impact will be the stuff of legend. One thing the cruzlims are actually right on is that Trump supporters have no particular loyalty or even use for the gop.

Correctamundo. All the third party stuff is hot air. One tweet from Trump and the GOP is gone. POOF. A lot of unemployed GOP beltway careerists. That’s the last thing they want.

I agree. This primary season is a disaster for Republicans. Trump had a chance to win it all . . . but failed to do his homework. His policy ignorance is enormous. It’s all sound bytes, bluster, and word salad. For a so-called principled conservative, Cruz is a sleazy political opportunist and generally unlikable. And the GOPe has completely lost the base of the party. It’s awful in every respect.
