Remember when Jimmy Carter beat Ronald Reagan in 1980?
That's right. Jimmy Carter beat Ronald Reagan in 1980.
In a series of nine stories in 1980 on "Crucial States" -- battleground states as they are known today -- the New York Times repeatedly told readers then-President Carter was in a close and decidedly winnable race with the former California governor. And used polling data from the New York Times/CBS polls to back up its stories.
All of which will doubtless serve as a reminder of just how blatantly polling data is manipulated by liberal media -- used essentially as a political weapon to support the liberal of the moment, whether Jimmy Carter in 1980, Walter Mondale in 1984 -- or Barack Obama in 2012.

How many of Donald Trump's supporters are agonized over the polls supposedly demonstrating his unelectability vs. Hillary. None, of course.
I'm a Cruz supporter. Am I likely to change my vote because so many polls point to Trump as the likely, eventual Republican nominee? No.
All these polls do is cause us to worry about that legendary "low-info" voter who will go along with what the media suggests. Of course, if he's that low-info, he won't have heard about the poll, either.
Much wasted ado about nothing, IMHO.
Remember being in line with a bunch of military in Harker Heights, TX who could not wait to vote FOR Regan over Carter. Line was at least 2 hrs long Harker Heights is next to Ft Hood.
“I dont remember them saying Carter would win.”
Here ya go, yarddog:
Gallup Poll: Jimmy Carter 47 — Ronald Reagan 39
Hillary has the exact same problem, but the media never points it out. She’s been in the public eye for decades and is even more well known than Trump. She has extremely high negatives, and her favorability with men is much worse than Trump’s favorability with women. She is strident, unlikeable, and can’t think on her feet. Huge numbers of the young voters who support Bernie will not bother to go vote for her. Her track record in office is abysmal. She has a history of corruption going back decades, and currently has at least two government agencies investigating her and those closest to her. She has the threat of indictment hanging over her, and will have to deal with legitimate questions about her health and physical fitness to be President.
Hillary was allowed to run this time because it was her turn. She is the Democrats’ Dole, only less appealing. She was allowed to run because after eight years of a Democrat president, the odds are against any Democrat winning. The DNC didn’t want to ruin any of their younger, better candidates by tainting them with a loss.
If Hillary were the Republican candidate we’d be tearing our hair out. Thank God she’s the Democrat’s problem.
The surprising thing this cycle is how accurate most polling has been. Yes, there have been big outliers and suspicious timing, but those have been easy to pick off.
The RCP and Huffpo averages have been very close in most races considering that primaries are much harder to poll than general elections.
I don’t think many are being fooled by the few outlier polls. They stick out like sore thumbs and look stupid quickly after the voting happens.
There is more chicanery going on in the ancillary polls, like favorability, general election matchups, etc. I’ll stipulate that.
I don’t remember any polls showing Carter was beating Reagan close to the election..
The media was making it a lot closer to keep interest up to sell time and newspapers...
