House Speaker Paul Ryan decided not to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, but he declined to rule out accepting it if a deadlocked party convention turns to him this summer.
"You know, I haven't given any thought to this stuff," Ryan said Tuesday night in an exclusive interview at the Capitol. "People say, 'What about the contested convention?' I say, well, there are a lot of people running for president. We'll see. Who knows."
Ryan, who ran in 2012 as Mitt Romney's vice presidential nominee, has taken no public actions to encourage the idea that he could become a candidate. To the contrary, a political committee set up to draft him into the 2016 race recently shut down at the urging of the speaker's aides.
"I actually think you should run for president if you're going to be president, if you want to be president," Ryan said in the interview. "I'm not running for president. I made that decision, consciously, not to."
Yet Donald Trump, even as he has established himself as the clear front-runner in the Republican race, still faces a challenge in rounding up the 1,237 delegates he needs to be nominated on the first ballot at the Republican convention in Cleveland.

Trump and Cruz need to make a deal among themselves for the good of the country.
They’re going to pull some kind of underhanded switcheroo. GOPE is TOTALLY untrustworthy. If a rule don’t exist, they’ll write a new policy to get their own way and stay on the gravy train.
Looks like GOPe is more than willing to start a civil war. Maybe a literal one.
Not if Cruz is really anti establishment. We’ll see but no rule should be passed without Trump and Cruz’s say so since they have all of the delegates
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are witnessing the historic crack-up and death of the Republican Party.
Take notes so you can tell your grandchildren.
Before the convention.....I agree.
They really are tone-deaf to the anger.
This would make good sense, but I wonder if they have the kind of relationship that would allow them to team up. I know politics makes strange bedfellows and all, but the birther thing was nasty, as has been Cruz' criticism of Trump.
Personally, I think a Trump/Cruz ticket would be a juggernaut.
I’d rather vote for Hillary.
One thing on which Cruz supporters (like me) can line up with Trump supporters absolutely is any further abuse whatsoever of the will of the primary voters by the elitist scum that generally rules the RNC. Trump is not my favored candidate. I have many deep reservations about him but he is NOT Moral Monster Mitt Romney. If Trump wins the GOP nomination fair and square which he seems to be doing, then the RNC should stand down and GTF out of the way. If Cruz were to be nominated fair and square, then I would expect the same of Trump and his supporters.
This is small d democracy. If I cooperate with RNC depriving Trump and his supporters of the meaning of their vote, then I have no right to expect respect for my vote.
At least on this Ted Cruz should eagerly seek to agree to engage in solidarity with Donald Trump. Trump is close to victory, he and his supporters should be magnanimous and stop antagonizing other candidates and their supporters who are now going to have to unite (in all likelihood) with Trump or watch Hillary take the POTUS oath of office (which she would have o more intention of honoring than did Obozo). If I were Trump or a Trump supporter, I would make myself be gracious to earn the support of those reluctant to support him.
Ryan sounds just like he did before becoming speaker of the house...sounding like he doesn’t care.
IF he became the nominee, he will pick Rubio as VP. They are BOTH OWNED by the same open border/free traitor LOBBYISTS in DC...Grover Norquist and Cesar Conda, who is Ryan’s mentor and got him into DC politics and is chief of staff for Rubio.
If this happens, it’s all over with. We will have been completely sold out.
“Trump and Cruz need to make a deal among themselves for the good of the country.”
Cruz can’t. He’s too beholden to the Big special interest $$.
“Looks like GOPe is more than willing to start a civil war. Maybe a literal one.
They really are tone-deaf to the anger. “
Money talks. And it’s the only voice they hear.
Ryan-o is a spaghetti-spined ideological treasonweasel who deserves political extermination every bit as much Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, McConnell, Cornyn, Alexander, Corker, Cockroach and the rest.
Sorry, Cruz supporters at this point are enabling the GOPe. Period. The guy got 17% in Florida, 13% in Ohio. This while NO ONE has attacked him since SC. He got about 25% of the vote in Michigan. He hasn’t excited the electorate and if he does win now he will win because of NY, NJ, CA states where he has ABSOLUTELY no chance in a general election He will win not because of who he is but because the party elites hate Trump. He was also in the mid teens in Virginia I might add. This is not someone who deserves the nomination. If Trump were getting these type of numbers tell me you’d honestly suggest that he should be given the nomination at this point. Cruz supporters are enabling this crap. The guy is 44 years old, make nice, join the administration or bash Trump for 4 years in the senate and run again. A Selfish Ted is worst than a lying one
By the way, if he ran again after Trump destroys the GOPe then he may actually be able to affect real chance. EVEN if he were to win under these conditions he will owe so many favors it’ll be a pretty hollow win
I don’t trust them. I’ve heard the words “Ryan” and “Nomination” 3 times in as many days.
Well I am sure if Rubio is anti Establishment and would say this is BS but we will learn alot about Ted Cruz soon enough.
